Chokka is crazy expensive, but if you willing to pay more per kg for the bait than if you bought the kabeljou in the shop, the best quality hand caught chokka will always outfish the other stuff.
Focus on a target species, don't just throw a bait and pray.
Learn correct traces and then play around with them till you find what works for you.
You DONT have to use the newest flurocarbon trace with the R200 a packet hooks. Sharp hook is number 1 and i've had very expensive circles open up, while the cheap adrenalines held their own, same as Ive had Daiichi's break, while Landit aka Bendit hooks hold firm on crackers catching 2 or more on the same hook.
Social media is a lot busier than Sealine for example, forget about trying to figure out exactly where guys are catching. Take note of the conditions, wind direction, what the wind direction was 2 days prior to a day good catches are made, more or less what the weather was doing leading up to the day. Swell sizes.
Try and replicate the conditions rather than the exact spot people were catching. Keep note of these and then try and find spots to fish in those conditions. You see someone catch 5 Kob at Melkbos on Facebook Thursday, wind swings Friday and Saturday you wonder why you are not even catching a skaamhaai.
Over the years I have had good success on the west coast with kob learning to wait for certain wind and swell conditions after certain other winds. These work from Ganzekraal to 3de Steen. Not being able to go fishing as much as I like to anymore, I still call the conditions and then watch social media to see if I'm right.
False Bay, November, if I wake up and see there is no dew on my car i'll bet money the guys sliding out livebait got good kob during the night or early morning without even looking at the swell sizes or wind direction.
I like to fish Gouritz seriously, as local outings are more social. If I happen to be there with a slight westerly again rather specific times of the year I know i'm going to get a cracker on, getting them out well that's part of the rush. Again, my favourite spot is one of the worst spots according to locals, but I try replicate conditions not spots. I have full confidence as I've fished it so often I know the reef structure, and have an idea how the crackers and galjoen feed along the way the reefs run. You can't gain this from forums or facebook, that is time spent next to the water.
South Wind drops the water temp in most places I like to fish, sometimes within an hour you can feel your sinker is ice cold... Go home watch the rugby.
