Someone who lives in JHB (well the last 11 years), spends $$$ to my local tackle store in JHB in preparation for the trip....200lb wire traces, 10/0 hook rigs, new line/braid on the reels (Trinidad and Saltiga), also eager to really put to the test his new HMG Assassin,
Then, there is the bait....spends $$$ to my 'local' tackle store in Dbn to fly bait to me here in JHB, some nice fresh mackerels, some of which are real "sighza's"
Then spends $$$ on fuel (not to mention the moola he dished out in the beginning of the year on a new 4x4!), drives down to St Lucia, whose fishing partner is a 5 year old, only chatter the whole 7 hours drive there is..."Daddy, are we there yet?"
Then, spends more $$$, there is the accommodation and living costs, meals, etc…, while down there.
Then there is the weather (7 day trip).... :headb a couple of s/w busters, ONE reasonable fishing day, the last day of fishing before driving home (go figure)....time to maximise my chance and saving my pride, is there some hope?
Takes the biggest mackerel in his arsenal of well packaged and prepared baits, who came from great distances (more well travelled than the angler) Damm bait was flown in from PE, then to DBN, then to JHB). Opens up his trace book (first time doing so, bad weather = no surf fishing). Forgets the hours it took tying 20 slide traces (just in case). Selects the 'right one'[/i] with the big mackerel, carefully ties the mackie....elusions of grandeur[/i] going through his mind...
After throwing his sinker out, one of his best casts, swear it went more the 200m....no-one around to confirm this. He walks down with his bait to the water edge to slide the bait. Meanwhile...junior gently reminds dad, that he has caught now fish number 16. Score for dad is still ZERO....The parent ponders, is it worth the effort of telling this five year-old, its not the number of fish that counts but size, which then equals total weight, that counts...he ignores as the score now is 18, another double hook-up of tiny Wave Garrick...hell, I've got fish in my tank at home, bigger than that!
Anyway the angler bids farewell to the sliding mackie as it skips on the surface, pink skirt flashing through the swells. More elusions of grandeur[/i] as he ponders a strike by a Kingie or a 'Couta as it disappears beneath the swells. after about 20 minutes of fervently rod shaking, places the rod in the stand, adjusts the drag & ratchet.
Sits back, relaxing with a ice cold Windhoek, every now and then the quietness is shrillingly interrupted by an "On-Dad" from a still-wet-in-the-nappy-ankle-biter, the score clocks on to 23.
And so the wait to even start putting points on the board, begins.....1 hour passes, 2 hours passes…beer supply now finished (shit, still sober)…still he waits.
