Whats Sealine's server security like

Emp

I was brousing through the new members to welcome them and came accross a new member that seems like it is spam mail that got registered as a new member and this makes me worry about the security on the server ito firewalling spam and phising and so forth.

Here's a link (hopefully) to the member in question?

Hi LGF,

Sealine gets bombarded by spambots every single day. It has become my daily task to manually remove these registrations and ban their email addresses which is really frustrating and time consuming.  At the moment, registration on sealine does not include a "captcha" routine. That means we do not have a challenge response type of test to determine whether the user is human or not. This makes it easier for bots to register and submit spam links on to our registration form.

The captcha routine has already been sorted, it will be uploaded together with sub-forums - shortly.

Regards

Emperor

You guys are doing well i tell you. A local fishingski website has been inundated with porn, viagra and the like, and they are even displayed as topic posts, never mind just emails.

CHEAP_VIAGRA must hold the record for being the newest member for the longest , at one point he was listed for about 2 weeks , i think.

Guys the spam you receive in your e-mail has nothing to do with SEALINE or the info displayed on your profile.

The most common method of unscrupulous companies getting your e-mail address and then spamming it, is when you recieve e-mails from 'friends' that list everyone's e-mail addresses in the to: line. If you reply to a message like that, it lists automatically every e-mail address that the original message was sent to... from there your e-mail address gets dispersed across the Internet, very quickly and very easily. Spam bots pick up on multiple addresses very, very quickly. Once your address is added to a spam database, it's really tickets... nothing oyu can do from there on.

So, when someone sends you a joke/attachment/whatever and has your e-mail address listed along with several/many others... send them a snotty note back and ask them not to do it again! When sending an e-mail to several addresses, people should be using  the BCC: option - (Blind copy) - then no-one gets to see your e-mail address. Thats just common Internet Manners- Netiquette.
