What to do with fishermen keeping undersize gallies and exceeding limits?

I'm probably one of MANY keen galjoen fisherman. I wouldn't say I'm a born recreational angler, but I do like to stick to the rules and I often think of future fish stocks.

Not often you catch 2 gallies, which is the limit, but I know of guys here in George which are really good gallie fisherman, but they always keep their undersize gallies. They purely go out to catch as much as they can, and then they sell the fish as well.

Now, the size for gallie is 35cm, and often I will release one that size, because only then are they sexually mature to spawn for the first time. (and are 6 years old)

I wouldn't like to mention a name or two, but don't you guys think that such guys must be taught a lesson somehow?

Rob a topic like this came up a while ago. Much heated debate followed. I think even a friendship or 2 saw it's a$$

I think it's redicilous. Then again i know i've transgressed the laws in other areas.

However i do think one should stick to the limit, and at times even keep under the limit. As you say, a 35cm fish sometimes is also not worth keeping. You don't have to keep 5 kob just coz the regulations say you can.

Problem is people are often so occupied with "if i can" that they seldom stop to think "if i should".

If you have concrete proof and it's not hearsay, personally i'd say name them. Also tell them face to face they are being redicilous.

Hiya Guys,

Please keep this thread above the rod bucket.

Topics like these have in the past gone very pear shaped, very quickly!?!

Many Thanks,

the best is to get some of that old red bait that one uses for them. go to cash crusaders and buy a old liquidiser and put the redbait into it and liquidise until a fine past, then just pour it down their cars airvents infront of the windscreen.

Haha! That is quite funny! That guy would be so negative! :uzi

Yeah, I agree Marthin, but it's those type of guys that has the gallie numbers where they currently are.  And obviously insufficient knowlegde about this fish in the past. Like breading habits etc. It's just amazing how the numbers have declined over the past 10 years.

if they doing it through ignorance you can probably help them

if they doing it through greed then u may be able to help them

if they doing it to make money then its unlikely they will change - just a perlemoen poacher wearing a different hat
