What to do first

Hey Guys trying to become more of a effective fisherman.

I fish mostly the river in Kenton ie between PE and EL and have started to understand what lures to use and how.

But im still not sure that im using the right lure and technique at first. When fishing high i start off with small minnows and quick retrive then later change to a slow retrive. When fishing closer to the mouth i start off with a small spoon also with a quick retrive then move to soft bait minnows.

Main catch is Garrick and the few Kob. Still waiting for the ellusive springer and river snapper.

Question is:

What lure do you guys start of with?
What technique do you use at first?
What is your next lure, technique and so on?
What colours work best in that area?
When fishing and you see the fish chasing the lure then turn around and swim away, what do u do, keep everything the same or does that mean the fish sees something wrong.

Thanks Gent

Hi.

it all boils down to what the water conditions are like, weather conditions and water colour. also what sort of bait fish are in the area.

rule of thumb is - for sunny conditions use bright coloured lures.

for low light conditions you use darker lures, like your purples dark greens ect ect.

your retrieval is also very important. when it is flat and calm use a slower retrieve with lots of pauses in between.

choppier faster moving water you use a faster retrieve.
don't be scared to mix things up.

i always try a surface lure first. like a Strike Pro. if nothing happens and you stay at the same spot, i will then switch to a Bucktail jig head or maybe a small drop shot.
try match your lure colour to the water colour.

hope this helps a bit.

cheers.
