What should I Buy?

As specimen carp angling is my passion I have found interest in bass angling. I seek advise on equipment which will suite my budget.

Basically I will not be doing bass angling every weekend but at least once a month so I do not require top of the range products. I have put a side R2500.00 for a rod & reel & tackle box and some lures..

Any advise will be appreciated!!

Hey Bigkano.

If I havd the cash it would be spent something like this...
R1300 Abu Revo S reel, R500 Shimano Clarus MH rod. 2 Cranks, spinnerbaits, flukes, senkos, fineness worms and then some basic terminal tackle like hooks, bullet and mojo sinkers and you're sorted with some quality kit. The only colours you need to start with are Watermelon, Green Pumpkin and Junebug. Get the basics sorted and you'll be a happy man!

Ok I just called up the guy at WA - krugersdorp and he recommends the following setup.

Shimano Clarus MH rod - R580
Shimano Castaic Super Free Casting Reels - r1800 OR
Shimano Curado 200 E Casting Reels +- r1600-1700.

What do you think of the setup and which reel do you prefer.

Sorry Could not resist........

Jokes aside are you planning on fishing exclusivley for bass with this outfit or do you intend on fishing for stuff like Kurper/barbel Etc.

If this is the case then you will need a multifunctional outfit and for this I would reccomend a spinning rig. If it is more for bass then a baitcaster outfit will be better suited.

Buy the best Quality reel you can afford - rod is also important but on a mulitplier reels the smoother the action the more distance you will get and the lighter the lure you can pitch.

I would also seriously consider Visiting the Fishing Pro shop on Lynwood drive - these guys are great they also have different outfits which you can test drive at the shop. Most guys like a 6ft rod - I have found I have a preference for a longer stick. I also Like Mediums where others like MH to Heavy so there is alot that needs to be taken into consideration.

Also the thought of Kitting yourself out with a 3k rig and discovering that Specimen is the better option could be a painful excercise.........

Anyways hope this helps

I wont lie, that Curado is a stunning reel! Oh, like Ryan says, go feel them out. I also love the feel of a Medium but a MH might be better if you want to fish the heavy cover which you normally have to contend with when you are bank fishing. Enjoy the process and go get some kit! I think we may have a conversion on the way. HEHE :)

the prices you got quoted are on the high end.

this is in cape town

clarus rod.R450

curado reel. R1450

if i was fishing quit often{once a week for bass}i would buy this other wise just buy a good spinning reel{R200} and a rod{300}you will catch the same fish.

also you would catch a lot easier with spinning because you are using it for carp fishing too.

just my 2c

BE CAREFUL!!!!! Bass Fishing is HIGHLY addictive! It all starts with one HIT and your HOOKED. No going back! you will keep buying TACKLE and will have no money for food and rent.

Then, you are never home and the wife wants a divorce. Soon after your only friends are other BASS addicts, but they are not true friends cause they also want the Bass your after.

You wonder the ponds and dams in the we hours of the morning and evenings. Travelling great distances for better hits, bigger fish.

As time goes on you start getting more and more hits all the time, desperately seeking that Monster 3kg Bass.

But don't Fret! there are loads of people in the same BOAT as you! Im proud to say I am one of em. :fishn

If you only starting off i would suggest going the cheep route. You will never stop buying gear so it really doesn't matter you get for starters.

I would however suggest going the baitcaster route from the start so you can get used to it reasonably soon.

Get yourself a cheap / entry level ABU Garcia baitcaster and a entry level Fenwick rod. Will last you numerous years.

This is good advise, a 6.6ft medium heavy rod, a good quality baitcast reel and add in a couple surface lures and some baby brushhogs.

Check out www.rodandmarine.co.za they have some Quantum and Daiwa reels at R800 - R1100 and there lures are well priced.
