Look at the new Shimano Exage 4000 FD. And load her with 20lb Sufix 832 power pro braid and you are good to go. I catch big cob with that setup to. The 2500 size is also n good real but for those big grunter in the breede i would stick with the 4000.

Charl, you don't even need to go for such expensive tackle for grunter specifically. I normally go down with 3-4 rigs. For Grunter my Shimano Sedona 2500(R600)/Daiwa Megaforce 7ft m/l (R500) and 6lbs braid with 10lbs fluorocarbon leader is by far my favourite rig!SERIOUSLY good fun for BUS grunter!
You could get yourself a reel and another decent rig for cob/leerie for probably R2k.
Just my 2c

Fully agree with @Chris_Watson. I use a Sienna 2500 with 10lb gatorbraid and a little 7ft Elbe Blue Crystal; I've landed close to 100 grunter on that little set-up, including my best ever, which was a 6kg fish.

I think it cost me R800 for the rod & reel if I remember correctly, but it was about 3 years back, so I could be wrong.

Good luck dude. Saw on Ultimate Braai-Master a while ago the guy were pulling mammoth grunter around the mouth at Witsand. Beautiful spot too. ::tight:

Not the easiest to cast with if you dont know how. Very responsive though, and might be easier to use from a boat too. Saw an old dude spinning on North Pier with a 6inch KP and 9ft trout rod. He made it look easier.

U beat me to that one......no doubt the best reel for grunter fishing, especially when they are feeding shy. Loaded with 3.6kg and a 5wt fly rod is the ultimate. Then you know you have a tussel on your hands.

From a boat......its the ultimate reel. Going for under 300 for the non deluxe model.

Just love and respect a kp so much.

Returned from my breede trip..was a little too short, the river is packed with boats this time of the year spent 3 days fishing, only managed 1 grunter, and a small steenbras.

The grunter fishing was extremely slow for most people..i was surprised that a lot of cob were being caught on the river..there was a 13kg cob landed, maybe should've targeted a bit cob too....cant wait for the next trip..will be there in feb again..

ps: The Sedona is defnitly a great reel, for anyone looking for a 2500 sized reel, its very smooth

thanks for all the input guys!
