For ease of use and cost of replacement parts,you can't beat a rubber powered gun.I believe pneumatics will also chase off wary fish from an area after you have taken a shot as they make a huge noise.

Best make ................... that could open up a can of worms  :blah

I really like the newish omer handles with the line release on the side. It fits my hand perfectly, I have big hands. Also the side line release makes the shooting line wrap tightly across the barrel which I think creates abit less noise if you are moving the gun fast through the water. I also have 3 guns with the beuchat grips which are really solid- workhorse stuff. I hear rabitech grips are also good. For my barrel I like carbon cause I am a perfectionist. I also like rabitech's rail stuck on. For muzzels I have 3 guns with rabitech's open sights. The big advantages with them is a smaller head profile- less drag, and that the line holds the spear firmly in place which helps when shooting cracker or working caves. I have one muzzle for screw-in bands which is a sporasub. I like the slight elevation above the barrel as I like using a neoiprene sleeve over my barrel when not using rails. Also the spear sits more nicely in the muzzle compared to say omer muzzles.

This is just my 2c.

There is nothing wrong with Rob's guns. If you live in Natal there is probly no real reason to even look at other makes. I say this because Rob is great with his service and is always willing to help.
On the subject of BEST , a custom made speargun will always be the very best.
Do any of you guys use the 2 gun pully rig?

Hi Guys, I have custom guns, the range all with the same handle (originally Picasso, but is the same as the Rob Allen). This means that you get the same trigger and hand feel with all of your guns which is useful. Louis' Rabitech handles are also fine, just pick whatever feels good in your hand. I have Rabitech barrels (longer ones are rail), and Rob Allen aeroplanes so I can tie all my own rubbers to the length I like. Think most of the stuff is quality nowadays, I would stay away from the Med stuff, and go with RA, Rabitech or Freedivers as we generally have more robust fish here, and those thinner spears they come with will just bounce of a solid creacker or poensie.

just a quick question... where do you get your neoprene and how do you cover your barrels with it? Sounds like a brilliant idea

You can usually get offcuts from wetsuit manufacturers. Either sew a tube and fit it before fitting the handle or just glue it around the barrel. On the rail guns I have seen a coating that looks like a teflon. Makes sence to me to get the spear running as smooth as possible.

Aslo speak to Miles he has an exstensive knowledge on spearguns and has tried many a gun out in the deep.
