Talking about artlure… at the ESA Midmar compo recently I caught a 4,6kg Carp with a Fluke… I assumed that I had just pulled the lure over the Carp and foul hooked it… but at our club comp at Inanda on Monday my partner caught a 5,02kg Carp on a Fluke and the hook was in the exactly same place as mine was… my guess is that these bigger Carp do indeed give little fishies a go… your thoughts?

Hey ROb.

If I haven't already - welcome to sealine.

I have caught carp on plastics, cranks, fly, spinners, spoons but predominantly we catch them on small leadhead immitations (Intentionally I add).

AT the right time of year they will nosh just about anything in the winter months they become very finicty and this takes real finnesse fishing to get them (They are worse than bass).

I have even had them grab small spinnerbaits during carp spawning time - not the spawning carp but there are many around the spawners along with the barbel after free lunch....................

The bigger Carp will even take Rapalas and the ABU Killer minnow lure as happened many years ago at Rietvlei Dam, Pretoria. And Bass will sometimes take "pap" baits intended for Carp - happens at Inanda and Albert Falls ...

Congrats on a very nice catch, would love to "stoei" one of those ones!

Hi MAN

Sorry for asking but i don't really understand. What do you mean you would like to stoei one of "those"? Your profile states that you had caught a Bass just a few grams smaller than this?

So you already stoei'ed one like that?

Appologies for beeing confused ey.

Yep, she was caught while 'strolling'. I have only ever caught a handful of bass over 3kg's on anything but strolling, then again, I don't do much else other than 'stroll'. Many elitists say that strolling isn't fishing, and I agree 100%, I prefer to call it … ‘Catching!’

With regard to tournaments and Trolling:-
1. The rule by SABAA clearly says “No trolling on your MAIN motor.”
2. The definition of a main motor is a motor that can get your boat on a plane, if it is not capable of this at full throttle, it is called an AUXILLARY.
3. The definition of trolling is “…pulling a wet line from a boat that is moving”, be it by wind, current, petrol motor or electric sneaker motor.
4. There are not many anglers I have met that will at some point of the day in a tournament, not allow the movement of the boat to induce movement on the lure.
5. Then there’s the argument, “… but the boats doing all the work.” I don’t know about you guys, but my boat without a skipper is pretty useless. Not to mention dangerous.
6. Another argument is that “…it’s an unfair advantage because your lure remains in the strike zone for longer”. If I am targeting a tree that’s holding fish while strolling, I have 2-3 seconds of being in the ‘strike-zone’, then I have to make a huge turn, line up once again and hope for the best in those few seconds once again. If you have done your homework and know the structure well, you can throw a plastic to that tree and entice those bass down there for as long as you want.

Where does the name ‘Strolling’ come from? It was from an article in the Stywe Lyne magazine written by Christie Thomas, who is one of the most credited South African Pro anglers who has just got back from a couple of years of tournament fishing in the States. It’s a technique using local know how and skill combined with the movement of the boat to entice a bass into hitting a fast moving lure.

The latest issue of SA Bass has an article on the front cover “Trolling Lipless Crankbaits”, by the ‘Bassaholics. These guys also have a massive amount of experience locally and internationally. This is an absolutely deadly early morning, late afternoon technique.

This does come with a caution though, you are going to get a lot of flack from the purists while on the water. But like Dustin Hoffman said in the movie, ‘Wag the Dog’, “Nice enough guys … they just haven’t thought it thru.”

Go get yourself a piggy this winter …… try Strolling!
