Went to Bazley this morning to try my friends custom built 400/7 HMG and Saltiga 50 to see if i could cast with it before i order one from him! WOW what a rod!!! After just a couple of throws i was getting much better distance than with my normal graphite rod!!

As i got a decent cast out to sea, the guys to the right of me started running up and down the beach as the shad came on the bite! I decided to grab my L&F with the light tip, and try to get some live bait! 5 min later one nice size shad! Then put the unfortunate bugger on the slide, and sent him to meet his maker! Because i'm use to nothing happening when i've got a live bait on, i decided to get some more shad! They were crazy, every sard that hit the water, came back with a fairly peed off shad!

All of a sudden, i heard the very unfamiliar sound of a reel screaming it's bearings off! I shoved my rod into the hands of the angler next to me (did not know him from a bar of soap) and ran up the beach as fast as my 128kg body would carry me! Grabed the HMG, took up the slack, and gave it a hit! WHAM, i was onto the biggest fish of my life! The fish took line twise, but i was winning the battle with ease! Some of the other anglers said it broke the surface and that it looked like a big Garrick! And then just as i was already seeing my post on Sealine with me and my 10kg + garrick, SNAP!!!, the leader knot parted! (always test your knots, and those of your friends)

Well i was disapointed, but it was the most adrenalin driven expeiriance of my fishing life!!!

After my heart started beating normaly, i tried to get some size shad for the smoker! I ended up landing +- 40 shad, and only kept the 3 that was over size!! I really enjoyed my day!!!!!!

BUT NEXT TIME I'L GET THAT BIG BUGGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unlucky man...but doubt it would be a garrick at this time of year. Springer jump when they hooked but not sure if they would take a big shad livie

also thought time of year was wrong, but the guys on the beach told me they saw the dorsel fin and the spots on the side of the fish! it was not jumping though, it was only breaking the surface!!!

Bad Luck Bro. Might have been a nice big Queenie!
I Know how you feel! I fought a Fish (Sat night) for an hour and 45min only to get parted off on some reef. Lots about 100-150m of line in the process.

Howzit Office Fishing club. Where were you fishing at Bazely?
Off the high rocks or Des? I owe a house there so know the area pretty well. Had a few good hookups over Xmas. Lots of Shad, springer and a few big Sandsharks and kob were coming out.

Cheers
