A general rule of thumb will be 1kg of lead for each 10kg of body weight.

You may need a bit less with your surf suit as they tend to be a little less buoyant than an open cell suit of the same thickness.

Another thing to consider is how deep you dive. I use my full weighed belt when diving in areas of 0-15 m but have another lighter belt if I target areas where I will be diving deeper than 15 m.

I'd start with 6kg or even less because you have a surf suit... I'd start with about 8kg if you had a proper 5mm diving suit....

hey justin,
is this for spear fishing or for scuba diving? The depth of your dive has a big influence on the amount of weights needed. Land shark is right, general rule of thumb is 1kg per 10kg body weight, but this is for a 8mm dive full body dive suit. I would also start with approx 7 weights if you dont dive to deep.
