Hi there,

how was your weekend's fishing? I went down to vaalkop on Thursday to go fish for carp, the whole day there was only one bite 2.5kgs, and then on sunday I went to roodekopies and not even once bite. So what I want to know is, when does the fishing season realy start?

Thanks in advince for your replies.

its always fishing season, there is no start or end date.
summer is more fish but normally smaller. winter is less fish but bigger. winter can produce plenty fish, it just takes more effort and persistance.

during spawn fish are the hardest to catch. summer or winter you have to find the fish and have the right plan and preperation to be successfull. hard work and extra effort is always rewarded in the long run.

My experience and I've tried the winter thing quite often at Vaalkop, Roodekoppies and Klipvoor, is that the winter fishing is not good at all.  These dams are all in the warmer climate areas (summer and winter) and one would expect winter fishing to be better than that of the colder areas e.g Highveld, in winter.  The dams in the colder (winter) areas such as Vaal Dam, Bronkies, Witbank give me much better results in winter.....so winter for me is Vaal Dam mostly and it doesn't let me down.

Does anybody else experience the same in winter?

I think the vaal is so overpopulated that the fish are always hungry. Too much fish(especially small fish under 5kg) and too little food.

A dam I struggle with constantly is Roodeplaat. More natural predators keeping the population under control. Lots of natural food to eat. Much more big fish up to 16kg (probably bigger). Much harder to fish.

jip naruto, thats correct. thats why there quite a few fish in there over 12kg's. but thats also why its a more challenging water. you need to be spot on there or you could end up hating the venue. but once you start to work the water out, many good fish can be landed.
