We left VDBP at about 15:30 Friday afternoon and arrived there an hour later. What a nice place to be for the weekend. Private. Quiet. No People around. Own riverfront with lapa and bon fire and built in braais.
Got to the water at about 5 and tried for some vaal gold. Myself being a pap gooier it did not go all too well. Fish were turning all around us and even attacking the reeds in the shallows, but didnt want to attack any of my flies.
Next morning the same thing happened. I then blamed the high water level (waist high min) After breakfast we head out to Shoemansdrift bridge.
Shoemanshof is a private farm with few chalets and spaced far from each other.
Was a 5km drive. Got there and a few people were nailing cats with platties in the stream (INTERESTING) Anyway, here the water level was very high too and there was no fly fisherman in sight and the rapids was not really crossable to get to the good yellow fish rapids. So i got into the water just under the mini dam wall and started to fly. After about 30min i got a muddie of about 1.5kg. No pic. I did not have a net and as i picked it up for the photo he escapes my hand and got away. Got it in on video though.
Next morning we went there again and this time i hooked a 2kg catfish on a yellow and black larwe immitation, man was that a fight on a 5/6wt with a 3x leader.
Right, now the good part. Saturday afternoon when it was to hot to be in the water, i decided that this fly fishing crap is crap and hooked a dead chick on a 10ft carp rod and sent it into a side stream with slower running water and a heavier weight. 3min later the alarm went off and i had to run to get there as i went around fetching driftwood for the nights fire. Long story short, i had 4 chicks, caught 4 cats in 40min. 1 broke me off (actually breaking my carp rod) by either getting snagged or as i wish to believe, it was a monster which immediately went down to lay on the riverbed... hehe
