We fished a local comp on the estuary this weekend.  Some really nice Grunters came out, with fish averaging 2 - 3kg.  We got 6 in total, along with a 1.8kg Striped Mullet, which gave me a solid pull.  Tried for some Leeries in the morning, with large mullet as livies.  Only small fish knocking them around, there have been some awesome Garrick coming out in the last week though.  Other species that came out was a nice White Steenbras of 4kg, and the largest Cob was 5.5kg.  Most of the Grunters were taken on Moonshine worm and Mud prawn.  All the Cob fell to fresh cuttlefish.  The lagoon seems to be producing better as of late, let's hold thumbs it keeps improving.  Anyone visiting Knysna is welcome to give me a shout.  Hopefully I can point you in the right direction.

I'm off to go try for a Leerie this arvy.

Hi RJ, I went out yesterday and only got 1 Leerie of about 50cm on live mullet. I saw a lot of surface action but they were not interested in my chisel nose plug. Are you going out on the boat?

Hi Herman. There's been loads of small whitebait in the estuary lately. I've spotted birds working these schools' just about every day. The only success I've had was throwing really small toby spoons and tiny slash baits at them, that were taken by small elf and even smaller leeries. The bigger fish seem to be traveling in smaller packs or solitary. I've also heard that Ashmead channel has been producing decent Cob on the troll. Something came up, and will probably only be going out later in the week.

I ALSO FISHED THE COMP BUT GOT A SMALL SHAD SO SMALL THAT EVEN THE MULLET THAT JUMPED INTO THE BOAT WAS BIGGER. NOW HOW DEPRESSING IS THAT. I TRIED EVERY BAIT AND ALL OVER THE RIVER, BUT YET NOTHING I GUESS IT HELPS TO KNOW THE PLACE. MUST COME FOR SOME LESSONS FROM YOU GUYS

Knysna estuary has got really cool fishing. seeing that you into the fly fishing now you should target some stuff in the lagoon ,like bull nosed mullet and grunter.there is a trout spot up in prince alfreds pass but its not that great unless you enjoy catching fat pellet fed
blimps in small ponds. Its also not a good time for trout up there .
Heres a bad pic of a big mullet I took with my 5 weight rod and a tiny GRHE nymph.

The mullet were feedin g in really shallow water over a weed bed as the tide was pushing in, it was a bit like fishing to a trout in a shallow stream .the mullet faced into the current and I cast my nymph about a foot up from the fish , he instantly turn and hit the fly  and I instantly set the hook .
So it was like dead drifting a nymph to a trout.

I am feeling like casting the long rod on the Knynsa lagoon. It is winter but truly hope something will be enticed by my fly, any fish will do. I will start trying for mullet if any is around.

Any tips for someone who has caught a fish on fly here in the winter time will help.

RJ are you and Gallieman still active?
I am new to fishing but my granddaughter, 8 years old, seems very keen on fishing. I will have to learn everything about fishing in order to help her. Will you be able and willing to help? She has caught a 6 inch long mullet, just by chance in the gill. Now we would both like to catch one the size you caught Gallieman.

Hi RJ,

I am a once per month 1 week Knysna resident.

I would like to meet up when down there again and see whether we can arrange an outing.

I have a Bowrider, Ski boat and Cabin Cruiser to use so it can extend our efforts from Lagoon Day night and or Deep Sea.

I will PM you with tel No. etc.
