We arranged to meet up for a session at Macs on Thursday, with water looking promising to find some galjoen. A few of us got there at 7:30 and pumped prawn at Monwabisi before heading down to get lines in the water. A few others were collecting bait at Milnerton and would only get there a bit later, and even more would join later in the morning.
So we check out the water after getting our prawn, and it looks great all over. We decided to fish near the entrance while the tide is high and we're waiting for others. It's me, Tubs and his brother Nick, Alec (think his Sealine name is wannabe) and Joker. Only a few peckers, probably stumpies, were around stripping the bait. Sea Creature (a new Sealine member but regular Macs angler) joined us and, as the tide dropped a bit, we decided to head further to the reefs. Ready for action!
The peckers were there too and Tubs and his brother both managed to hook some of the shall ones but were long-line released at first sight. Nick hooked another with his next cast and managed to land this size stumpie.
Next it was my turn with the first gallie of the day in hand, but it was just a baby and after a quick snap went safely back into the water.
Soon after I managed to land another feisty undersize gallie, but they were getting bigger and things were looking promising.
It went quiet for a while before Tubs and Nico had to depart. By this time Walt had joined us and soon I moved further out on the reef, casting in the vicinity of the redbait pods.
It wasn't long before my smelly redbait attracted a gallie and this one was size! A couple casts later, another slightly bigger one grapped the bait and made it into my bag. It went quiet again for a while, but with the turn of the tide I managed to land one more gallie of about 35cm which I promptly put back without even taking a photo. In the meanwhile pr0t0c0l, morbus and his brother also arrived and made it onto the reef - they spent most of the morning collecting bait! As the water started pushing me back, I decided it was time to make a move. I was pretty happy coming off the reef!
Earl and myself, guided by Walt, went to have a look at Strandfontein. There were a few anglers on the wall and on the beach, so we decided to put some bait in the water where we saw a bit of a wash amongst the rocks. Though the water looked really good for steenbras and galjoen, nothing wanted to bite.
As the sun set, I packed up and felt privileged to fish an area I would otherwise not dare fish alone. Thanks Walt, for your effort to start this group initiative!
