we are the LAW

So good to find this forum here. Without too much philosophical clap track here is a thought. I hate seeing the degridation of our beaches, slaughter of species exceeded bag limits etc now I do somethings which gives me some peace of mind and send the message home

a) Go fishing with a rubbish bag and clean up around me - have been asked several times what I am doing - when told that "I pay my taxes for the government to do this" I reply well if they don't solve the problem I will do some of it.

b) Get a fish care's line and report bad stuff - or tip off a "parkie"

c) Confront people myself - I have asked to see liscences and people have run a mile and dumped illegal catches - when asked who am I  - I tell them "that is for me to know and you to find out!". Yes I have had one or two close shaves - but sleep well knowing that I made some selfish bugger damn uncomfortable who is trashing our resources.

want to start small - stop kids etc mindlessly killing crabs and small fish on the beach -  do a deal catch a small crab or fish in a bottle for them and show them its beauty if they agree to give up the hunt.

The LAW is in the hands of the average citizen - when any democracy hands it over to specialist institutions (i.e. police and parks board)  - we let our power go.

Been keen to hear from any others who want to do something or are doing so....:cool:

Hi

It nice to hear something positive being postulated for a change. Too often we bemoan the problem but never offer the solution.

I will definetely be taking up the suggestions you posted and hope the 1000 odd members we have also look at your post with some sort of implementation.

Every little helps a long way.

kind regards

john,

Agreat pro-active idea. I think that sets a good example that anybody can follow. Generally tho us freshies have no excuse as most of our venues have rubbish bins at every spot.

Hiya

I would like to commend you on cleaning up your local spot as well as reporting any "bad" behaviour.

How-ever, i can't condone this:
c) Confront people myself - I have asked to see liscences and people have run a mile and dumped illegal catches - when asked who am I  - I tell them "that is for me to know and you to find out!". Yes I have had one or two close shaves - but sleep well knowing that I made some selfish bugger damn uncomfortable who is trashing our resources.
Firstly, you have no right to ask another angler to produce his licence. By doing so, you are impersonating a government official. Then, refusing to identify yourself!! If anyone asks me for my permit and won't identify himself, assuming he is NOT dressed in official government clothing, i'd tell him to bugger off!! Becoming a Vigilante is ILLEGAL and VERY dangerous to your own well-being. In South Africa today, you can't trust any-one. Stories of anglers being shot and hi-jacked whilst fishing is common. So, be very careful when approaching anglers you don't know, as they most probably are armed and could consider you as having dis-honourable intentions.............

Guys,

Miles has some valid points. Ask ghost what happened to him when he threw someones undersize fish back.

It's unfortunately not worth the risk to life and limb. For the rest, hell yes I see no problem in picking up litter. I hate fishing from a dirty spot. As for the reporting, it's just a phone call, so do it.

I well understand your argument; its an open debate - and I do not subscribe to full on vigilante style stuff (force) nor illegal impersonations (I never claim to be who I am not - just a psychological pocker game) and dangerous yes it is.  But all forms of activism are - see a lot of deeply destructive activism, need the more contructive type.

There is damage, wait for a formal structure or committee, don't conscentise the average citizen democracy falls a part....as it is doing....my contibution is not THE answer but it might provoke the debate as it seems to have and all of that is conscentising  through the engagement.

Vive la differnace!

johnjc,

Click on "My Account" at the top. Then on the new screen, click on "Profile" at the top left.

Fill out the form, I would also advise against your e-mail address being public. When it's all done, click on "Save" at bottom right.

That should get it all working.
