Ok so let me elaborate. I had my transducer fitted on the transom of the ski and the supplied bracket promptly snapped and I lost a very expensive transducer.
Any of you guys fitted your through hull transducer succesfully?
Up to what speeds do you get a solid signal?
Where and how did you mount the transducer?

Hey KB,
Yes, the transducer supplied is primarily for external mounting, however, most (if not all) jetskis use this transducer that is epoxied inside the hull but you will pick up some "noise" -normally surface clutter and loose some quality.
The "shoot through hull" transducer is an additional R1200 or there about and it is not flat and oval but round (almost like a D cell battery).
I use the Lowrance Elite 5 a have the normal transducer epoxied in my ski internally as I do not like holes etc in my hull. If you use the factory settings the quality and noise on the fishfinder is definitely more than usual, but if you correct the settings, reduce sensitivity etc you get 95%+ of the quality you would on an external mount.
Also, I have "tested" the water temp by comparing it to boats with external transducers and the water temp reading is only out by 1 - 3 degrees at the most.
I believe it 6 of the one and a half a dozen of the other when it comes to mounting your transducer internally or externally....

Hi KB I mounted my mark 5 X yesterday, its not a DSI like yours but my transducer also has to be mounted externally. What I did was super glue a small square of wood to the back of my craft. I then drilled the silver transducer holding thing into the block. The transducer is then attached to the arm/holder. This worked great and the advantage is that the transducer can be detached for easy transport over long distances. I will try and get a photo. happy fishing

The transom installation, which is the most widely used, places the transducer on the outside of the boat hull. This technique produces the least signal loss, and provides a way to adjust the transducer after installation. The mounting hardware included is designed to protect both the boat and the transducer should the boat strike debris in the water or when trailering. The transducer must be placed in a location that has a smooth flow of water at all times. If the transducer is not placed in a smooth flow of water, interference will show on the sonar's display in the form of random lines or dots whenever the boat is moving. The transducer should be installed with it's face pointing straight down, if possible. Make certain the transducer's location doesn't interfere with the trailer or hauling of the boat. Also, don't mount it closer than approximately one foot from the engine's lower unit. This will prevent cavitation interference with the propeller. Typically, the transducer should be mounted as deep in the water as possible. This increases the chance that it will be in the water in high speed and reduces the possibility of air bubble interference.

Thru-hull transducers install through a hole drilled in the hull of the boat. Larger boats or boats with inboard motors create turbulence that make transom mounting ineffective. Also, hulls that are very thick or are double layered, or made from materials such as wood or metal, (which do not conduct sonar signals) make inside the hull mounting inadvisable.

here's mine..its mounted on a stainless steel plate that's held at the base of the re-boarding step..the wiring is pushed through the drain plug & sealed with silicon..so NO holes drilled..but i only have one drain plug that works..better than drilling hole's.. i did the installing myself & picked up the idea from a fellow sealiner.. havent fished as often as id like, so let me know wot u guys think?? pro's & cons??
