Wanna Fish in da sea

    Right, So I have all this stuff for Bass Fishing. But I obviously need something different for Saltwater fishing. I am spending Xmas in East Londen with my Outlaws.

Now I don't want to break the bank, but I need advise please.

I need a two piece rod which will help me cast +/- 100m
It has to have a Coffee grinder reel because that is what I can cast with, and I dont feel like learning to cast a different reel while I am fishing.

What are your suggestions?


I want to catch Shad (Or any edibles). Now I have done it before and I remember that I need trace ( I have a lot that I use for Tiger Fishing), and I know there is a specific rig for them, which I can find. But what I need to know is:

1. Which hooks and what size?
2. Which Sinkers?
3. Artificial Lures or Sardines or both?
4. Buy here or there?
5. Where do I buy a sodding license??

Uhm, I am sure I have more questions that I havent thought of yet, but this is a start.

Appreciate your input!!

My family have a house just outside EL on the rocks.......can fish from my room (almost)........go there every xmas!! We can hook up for a session or two no problem!!

Would be funny if I get there without a rod and reel though... Or my light Bass outfit (Which I intend on trying anyway)

So what kit would you suggest?

Oh, and do you know of any Shad (or Elf) spots in EL?

If i roll out of bed and down the lawn onto the rock's i'm on one of the best shad spots!! Not too many around at xmas time though!!

I actually catch most of my fish for the pan on bass tackle at that time of the year anyway!! so you don't have much to worry about! Will put somthing together for you though....just a little under the whip at work!!

Ja, Xmas isnt a great time for Shad. But, even if I dont catch any, I dont mind. Would like to catch something and bring it home tho', otherwise my mother outlaw might really think her precious daughter married a pillik!!!

Now while I have been thinking about this, I have been visiting several sites that list what you may and may not catch and size limits etc etc.

Is there a site (or book I can buy) that has:
1. A picture of the fish species
2. Size and bag limits
3. Closed seasons

I basically want to print it and bind it so that I can have the info while I am fishing. I don't want to get into cr@p with the authorities for one, neither do I want to impact any species that I shouldn't.

Hopefully I can get something that will have all the info on one page, similar to this website http://www.mcm-deat.gov.za/recreational/bag_limits.html

the only thing that is missing on that site is a picture of the fish, and the closed season.

But you have to click on each individual species to get a pic for it. Is there a booklet somewhere that has the pics and everything that I can download, print and keep in my tacklebox??

Anyhow, Loams if you do get the info you need, please be such a kind man and forward me the details or link/s so that I too can get this booklet thingy for the salties domain in my salty bag (only used it twice in my life) but next time I would seriously like to hook something with fins in that huge blue dam.

Now I'm gonna get :fbash over the coconut for not READing THE FAQ ! ! !

To start, Get the Len Jones (small paperback) guide to fishing... (theres one for KZN, Cape, Diving etc).................you will not go wrong for around R20.00 (R100 bucks worth of info and good basic advice) from most tackle shops.

Buy el cheapo when you get down there (or borrow Noweeds old schoolboy kit that's probably still in his old bedroom cupboard... hehe)

If you decide u gonna visit the outlaws more often then I'm sure Noweeds will advise what to buy!

Anyhoo, MickJack, I go to the coast once a year at least, so I might as well get something relatively decent.... One day if I live on the coast I'll get HMG's Assasins etc, but for now, a 12 footer light or medium aught to do the trick.

My biggest worry however is license, hook sizes and sinkers. Line will more than likely be prescribed by the rod and reel.

Where do I get Len Jone's guide? Tackle shops??

Loams, The License is available at any post office. Yes the tackle shops should have the Len Jones guides which are brilliant.

I have just been searching on the net a bit.

Now before I go any further, I must tell you that I love books and magazines. To date, I have about 500 pages of articles on Bass fishing only, compiled from the internet.

Anyway, I digress, I been searching the net a bit for info on fish identification, rigs etc etc.... Whoooo boy, I can tell that I'll be spending some money in the next few weeks.
