I'm after any old tackle. If you are not selling please get in touch anyway and I can at least give you a proper valuation. I do not collect but I do use old centre pins on split cane rods and would dearly love some more
e. Anyone?

I have a couple of rods which i would like to get a valuation on if possible?
One is a split cane made in Redditch England and the other a fly rod made by Hardy which I believe is one of the most popular manufaturers around...
Will take some pics if interested?
Cheers,

Hi
Some pictures would be great.
I am also interested in the stories behind the rods.
some questions for the valuation:
Are the rods straight?
Do the ferrules make a knocking sound when the rods are waggled?
Do the ferrules "pop" when pulled apart?
How does the varnish look?
Are the sections of equal length?
Are all the bindings present and identical?

Is There no logo or makers name on the redditch rod? There were a few makers from there so I'd need to see the pictures to id it. Hardy fly rods are a bit wierd in that they range from worthless to worth a fortune! Yours should have writing just qbove the handle; what does it say?

hope this helps for now

Right…firstly I’m going to apologise about the quality of the pictures as I only had my phone to rely on.

1) Hardy Fly Rod
The first rod is a JET Hardy with the following markings on:
- Just above the cork grip it has the JET Hardy logo and directly underneath on opposite side it shows Q9
- 8’9”
- #8
- The screw reel seat bears the Hardy marking
The rod has 2 sections and each section has a #4 marking where they meet.
Ferrule is a tight fit and has no play whatsoever.
The tip section also comes with a little stopper which is made from wood and a soft alloy, probably aluminum.
All the whippings are yellow except for the first set on each section which is a darker orangey colour, but all is in very good condition and I am 100% sure they are original.
The back handle also has a little threaded bit so I presume that there used to be extendable, but unfortunately I am not in possession of it.
The rod also comes with a blue cloth bag bearing the Hardy logo.

I also found the following link regarding Hardy rods where they mention the JET rods. JET was the initials for Jon E Tarantino.

Interesting rod in good nick. Not much of a collectors rod...yet! I reckon if you were going to sell it you should ask for about R 3000-00. Who did the rod belong to? Family?
I would advise holding onto the rod, it's never going to be worth millions, but glass rods are making a come back with collectors and users like myself.
what of the cane rod? I'd really like to know its history in this country.

The second rod I have is a six sided 3piece cane rod manufactured by Precision Rods, Tudor Works, Lodge Road, Redditch, England.
The rod sections are of equal lenghts.
Brass/copper? ferrules which does make a knocking sound and they do not fit very tight at all.
The reel seat is not a screw type but rather 2 fittings that fit over the reel base and allows for the positioning of the reel anywhere on the grip.
All the eyes are identical and seem to have been secured with some sort of black "tubing-like" take or something, not sure how to explain but it almost looks like shrink tubing.
The last eye on the tip section has been retied badly with red yarn, but seems original.
The rod further has small sections of green whipping all over the rod.

Sorry I forgot about the threaded butt. I must admit ignorance having never seen it before. My guess...as you said, an extension of sorts. I can't think why though!

Hmmm interesting rod! It needs a bit more research. The green wraps: are they spaced about an inch apart along the rod? Your description of the tubing like wraps has got me a bit, I have seen them before but usually on cheap rods which this doesn't appear to be. Give me a couple of hours to make sense of it.

Hey no sweat!
I would say the green whippings are 1" apart but then followed with a 2" gap before the 1" repeats itself.
Wonder is the eyes might have been replaced, or at least the whippings sometime back in the day, but that said, I would have thought that some of the green whippings would have been removed... But I'm no expert on old rods, just love them!
I have a couple of reels too. One is the fly reel currently onn the cane rod, but I still have its original box. The other is a KP Morrits coffee grinder without box.
And somewhere in Nst I have a 6 or 8 sided fibreglass rod if I remember correct...

Ok looking good! Precision rods are highly regarded as users rods for for restorations. The tip eye has been replaced for sure. It is what is called a high bell whilst the rest are low bells.are you sure the wraps are not just very well done? I can't believe precision would have used the shrink tube, exactly what some cheap rods used, on their rods. If the wraps are tubing it is going to seriously devalue the rod. Who did the rod belong to? As a stripped blank you should be able to get at least 2500-00 for it. Because it is not a "name rod" like a sealy or b james or millwards or allcocks etc it isn't going to have much appeal to collectors overseas. Here though I've seen some extreme prices paid for worthless rods so you never know. On auction, I'd start the bidding at 5000-00 hoping to hit about 10 000-00. Trouble is finding the right buyer. The loose ferrules are a problem; I have just replaced a set on one of my rods and it is a pain! I assume the rod is straight? Any chance I could see the rod?
