Vaalriver May 16

Decided to go and check out what the Vaal had to deliver on Saturday... What a dissapointment to see rain comming down when we arrived at the launch. Luckily it did not last, but the weather was not nice, cloudy the whole morning and the wind blowing us up and down the river.

Got the boat in the water, and headed to some trees and reeds just opposite the launh... Pitched spinnerbaits into the struckture and nothing. Got out a jig and started picking up bites deep inside the struckture, but couldnt get a hookset...

My partner got out his lucky crank and got the first 3 fish but under sized. I decided to replace the jig with a 5" Senko and landed the first 2 keepers for the day, all in wooden laydowns...

That was that for the day, nothing els... Took out the boat and left for home at four.

Thanks for the report on the Vaal, I was wondering how the Vaal is doing. What you saw is typical Vaal winter pattern, the fish is much tighter to the hard structure close to the reeds. The other winter pattern use to be lilly pads in 10ft of water, I am lead to believe that there is not much lilly pads left as they were sprayed? Dark lures work well in winter on the Vaal lures like brushogs, senko and flukes.

Please let me know where you launched and what area did you fish?

Thanks

I am afraid you lost me, the again I don't know the area that well. The only public launches I am aware is Abrhamsrust, Emerald Casino and Three Rivers. Did you fish the upper half of the river (Towards the Dam Wall) or the lower half ? (Towards the Barrage)

there is a private launch area close to the casino, great spot seeing that we didn't see any people during the whole day.

Where did you go from there? Did you go down towards Barage or did you go up towards the Vaaldam?

We only fished that area, up to to where the suikerbos comes in and about 300m towards the barrage side. Opposite the launch. Between the wooden laydowns.

You were cetainly in a good area, the stretch between the Three Rivers inlet and  Suikerbos is ussually very good. Straight accross Suikerbos is a huge amount of big blue gum trees under the water that makes for good fishing. The Suikerbos mouth makes for good crancking and so does Three Rivers inlet. This is if the water quality good of course.

Thanks for the info much appreciated!

Pleasure HennieS.

I saw that the water was much cleaner up there than towards the barrage side... Thats why we decided to stay there and it worked for us, but thank you for your info.
