Vaalriver and grasscarp

Hi guys, we went to villiers this weekend, and during the day time seems every second fish was a grasscarp, is it like this all around the vaal river? Has the grass carp population expanded to a point where its becoming a problem? Anyone else noticing this around the vaal river?

yeah i think you are right catching plenty of them mostly small ones i think we should chop there heads off and use them as barbel bait

Guys' I've notice this to' we've got a stand close to Tago on the Vaal and every second fish you catch is a grass-carp' my girl friend' cast in at ! 40m and she finds her self a grass carp 0f 4.5kg see attached

This is not good news... lets wait and see how many other people confirm this... if this is the case then in a few years time cathing anything else than grasscarp might be a difficult task on the vaal river

A few years ago I fished a SA's at Vaal Barrage and there was more grasscarp than carp. Hear from friends that vaaldam is also delivering way more grasscarp than carp. Bloemhof also has a lot of grasscarp.

It has been published in the Bankangler magazine that all grasscarp be removed. One thing is for sure, its the best barbel bait you will ever find!

They've been in the system for 15 years+ now and at times you'll catch more of them than other fish and then at other times for a month or 2 you can't catch one even if your life depends on it.

Like the want to remove all Grass Carp some want to remove all Carp as both are alien and invasive

The populations are so well established that they're not going anywhere soon so expect to catch many, many more

Fish of over 17kg have already been caught in the Vaal Dam and 7-15kg are more than common in places like Cilliers and Oranjeville

I also think its a little too late too try and remove grasscarp from our systems, killing one here and there is not gonna make any impact at all on their populations. Well at least they put up a good fight.

Hey let's look at the bright side of the Grass carp they like Junk food to the Barbel!! The Catfish get bigger' and fatter now that the grass carp' have been growing so big in the Vaal, what is the record Grass Carp in the Vaal so far?

Grass Carp is in Rietvlei , buffelspoort , wemapen , but those dams dont seem to have a problem with over population.

Ons vang in Die Vaal naby Orkney en ons kry gereeld Graskarp die laate paar maande.Nog klein maar ten minste 4 per dag.Hier is 2 fotos van n graskarp wat n vriend die naweek gevang het naby Stilfontein, die vis het 14.5kg geweeg.Ek het so maand terug by Wolwespruit naby Leeudoringstad gestop om te kyk hoe dit lyk aangesien ek 3 jaar laas daar was,daar was BAIE graskarp in die vlak water. Selfs n klomp in die stroom wat le en wag vir iets om af te spoel.

Nou dis n GrassKarp wat ek wil vang..Wemmerpan het groot grasskarps so hoor ek maar het iemand al iest daar gevang?

Die graskarp wat so lê in die vlakwater of met hul sterte in die lig voer is perfek om met kunsaas te teiken. Hier is een wat op 'n loodkop by die Vaal Barrage gevang is, daar sien met baie voer sommer met hulle koppe uit die water besig om aan die riete te proe. Russel Bowton het die 6kg job by ons SA's so paar jaar terug gevang.
