Hi guys
Decided to hit the Vaal Dam for a night session on Monday, arrived at the dam at around 4.30pm. The plan was to fish for the evening and leave the next morning. I wanted to see what the fishing is like at the Vaal during the evenings.
Our luck, just got there, and had barely put the first rod in the water before the rains started. At first, it looked as though it would be light showers, but eventually the storm came in and it rained very hard till around 9pm. We were soaked!!
Eventually, the rain stopped and we managed to get the fire going and got our spirits up.
Got the rods in, tried floaties, mielies and swd as hookbaits. Dips used were FX/Q35, FX/Perdeby, Lootie/TAC/FX, FX/Devilsfork, Stuttafords.
Fishing was deathly quiet, with only 2 small carp landed for the entire evening session (on the SWD on the FX/Q35 and Lootie/TAC/FX combos).
Was hoping the early morning session would deliver some fish, as luck would have it, the heavens opened once again. We packed up by 6.30 am as my uncle needed to be at work by 9. So, a disappointing session for us all.
Some advice would be appreciated on the ffg
The area we fished at the Vaal was shallow, and we are not the best casters in the world. So my question is, is it worth doing a night session at the vaal knowing we cant get the rods to the deeper waters at say 120m plus? Or is it best to stick to day fishing when I know we can get some fish at between 40-80m, or take the lines out in the boat / canoe? to get to the bigger fish? Keep in mind that we prefer to target carp rather than barbel.
Will appreciate any advice.
