Vaal Dam Report 26 Dec 2011

Hi guys

Decided to hit the Vaal Dam for a night session on Monday, arrived at the dam at around 4.30pm.  The plan was to fish for the evening and leave the next morning.  I wanted to see what the fishing is like at the Vaal during the evenings.

Our luck, just got there, and had barely put the first rod in the water before the rains started.  At first, it looked as though it would be light showers, but eventually the storm came in and it rained very hard till around 9pm.  We were soaked!!

Eventually, the rain stopped and we managed to get the fire going and got our spirits up.

Got the rods in, tried floaties, mielies and swd as hookbaits.  Dips used were FX/Q35, FX/Perdeby, Lootie/TAC/FX, FX/Devilsfork, Stuttafords.

Fishing was deathly quiet, with only 2 small carp landed for the entire evening session (on the SWD on the FX/Q35 and Lootie/TAC/FX combos).

Was hoping the early morning session would deliver some fish, as luck would have it, the heavens opened once again.  We  packed up by 6.30 am as my uncle needed to be at work by 9.  So, a disappointing session for us all.

Some advice would be appreciated on the ffg

The area we fished at the Vaal was shallow, and we are not the best casters in the world.  So my question is, is it worth doing a night session at the vaal knowing we cant get the rods to the deeper waters at say 120m plus?  Or is it best to stick to day fishing when I know we can get some fish at between 40-80m, or take the lines out in the boat / canoe? to get to the bigger fish?  Keep in mind that we prefer to target carp rather than barbel.

Will appreciate any advice.

Hi Grassy

Generally night fishing at the Vaal is very productive and also better sized fish. Went to a Private Dam in Heidelburg on the 26[suP]th[/suP] and fishing was slow as well (I think it’s got something to do with our weather) I normally catch between 25 and 40 fish at this dam and on Monday I only managed to land 2 small barbell.

If you can tell us which venue you were at and where you sat this venue, it would help a lot. Vaaldam ussually produces around the clock, but you sometimes do need to get the rods out further than 80m(at least 100-120m). Invest in a small inflateable. Western Accesories had ones now for about R500.

Hi guys thanks for the replys.

Naruto - we were at a spot next to where Island Shores used to be, so say between Leboya Bay and Island Shores.  Not sure if the place has a name, and cant say exactly where we were sitting.  The good thing was that we did not get snagged once.

Ok, so a night trip to the vaal is normally worthwhile, guess it just wasnt our night.  The weather must have played some part, as it rained quite heavy.  The guys next to us on both sides had keepnets in the water, but they too called it an early night.

So will definately give the Vaal a go at night again.

Will look at sorting out my inflatable for that next trip as well, although I am not keen on going in at night.
