I’ve had good results with day old chicks using the following methods.

 You cut off the head, legs and wings (this stops it from running or flying away :walk) then you skin it and cut it into 4 and put two pieces on a hook,

 You cut off the legs and wings and use a two hook trace one hook in its ass and the other through the eyes and cut open the belly.

Slaughtered the barbel at Bloemhof in October (during a cold front, it was p!ss cold) with the water at only 16 degrees. Platties are the bait of choice for barbel, they just can't leave them alone. The biggest was 17kg, and the first day we caught about 60 kg of fish. Two of us battled to pull the keep net in the boat.

per kilo is difficult but per bird R5, i can work on a per kilo price. ive heard they chum an area the day before on one of those hennie papenfoes dvd,s. apparently it makes for a killer honey spot, if anyone has photies of the rigging, or drawing would be better as im sure its rather gross, please post away, thanx for the reponse kitefisher,

ps they can be transported in a cooler for up to three days with a block of dry ice, but this is targeted at the jhb guys
Come on diesel give us a sealine special price,  they cost R11 for 5 in the fishing shops, all cleaned and packed.

Ranvir, In case you haven't been welcomed before.WELCOME to the barbel forums, and thanks for input,I agree,:welcomesea:frogs should rate as their no 1 delicacy.Just beware there was a big hoo-haa over using frogs as bait ,as some frog-species wer apparantly also under threat of extinction,More from losing their natural habitat ,than from being exploited as bait, but nonetheless food for thought.

Hope you join in actively on the barbel-forums

Cheers

I have used smallmouth yellow heads in the vaal with great success. The yellow's were already dead in the keepnet btw...

hooks fit better on a muddie head. I release all the yellows when i catch them but their heads look like a better shape than carp as well.

Then again if u'r fishing 10/0's most fish heads fit.

hahahahaha, you know what also works very well, is an actually barbel head of a small barbel, it works so bloody well and the tough skin hold the hooks nicly in place if i get one ill show you how to rig oen, but i dont really like killing them
