Hi momo

Went dropshotting with family at Umlalazi this past Sunday. We fished the river to the right of the boat launch site. Had some really good action with bartailed flatheads and small kingfish on Berkley prawn and worms. One 60cm long flathead was hit while being reeled in by my son and came out with two big semi-circular chunks missing on either side just behind the head, all the way to the to the bone!

In the past we have caught grunter and kob in this area on the high tide with sardine fillets and prawn.

Umlalalzi is a really beautiful place to go to. There are very few places where you can fish while Zebra browse next to you. Sometimes the monkeys area nuisance though. A camper told us on Sunday that she had seen a hippo in the Mangroves. We did find some tracks but no hippo sighting.

If you really want to stretch your line, try the surf. There usually are flattties around.

Best of luck

Hi Momo

Unfortunately I don't own a boat.

All estauries of note in KZN are under the control of KZN Wildlife. I have been impressed with the facilities at the the resorts where I have been, and their efficient booking and advice service. Contact them at 033 8451000 or webmail@kznwildlife.com.

Hi Momom,

I was in the area about a year ago. The river was dead didnt even get a bite. I only fished from the parksboard resort and didnt have a boat. I saw a monster kob come out from the beach and caught a great shad run.

I dont know what conditions are like now. Good luck and enjoy the fishing

Guys the Umlalazi River is the river next to Port Durnford... where we had the last KZN Social. The Campsite Resorts name is Shangri-la. Check out the Port Durnford thread and reportback... there is plenty info and pics there...

hey slater
i was ther last weekend with the boat
launched on sat night
the river was pitch black and there were like sand banks everywhere.
didnt want 2 chance my motor sucking in sand so we pulled out
with the hope of fishing sunday so we could see the area
anyway the south westerly came through on sunday and cut our hopes of fishing the day short.
oh and the little while that we fished,it was dead!!
