Turning, Pouring of Lures

Does anyone here turn their own wooden surface lures or poppers etc? I've just started myself and was hoping to hear from anyone who's into this too? Would like to find out what kind of wood they're using, what paints etc.

As for pouring of Lures, any info with regards to moulds, the plastic mix, flavourants etc.?

Any info appreciated!

I have made various salt water lures, some by casting PU rubber and plastic, but mostly by machining from PVC.

I would not use wood but rather get some offcuts of various "plastics" (generic name for any material that looks like that)

Ive used material supplied by http://www.smooth-on.com/ they have a lot of info on their site.

Ive turned a couple of poppers and a Zara Spook lookalike so far but Ive been thinking of trying some plastic ones too. What kind of material is the plastic made out off and where have you managed to find some?

I've got a couple of methods I'm going to try out to create the moulds but that site looks promising with regards to the actuall material to use for the worms. Thanks!

Eish my freeeeend these ees a funny horse you're sadling up now, been there done that, made some wonderful lloking and even swimming just as great lures, but it's not worth it, why?

Well 1st of all if you're staying is Sunny SA (your profile needs an update, please?) then it's virtualy impossible to get hold of the correct materials, the people/companies that import or manufacture the materials needed when you go into pouring just won't deal with the ordinary man on the street ito quantities cause you're not gonna buy 10 000 liters of the stuff from them.  Now trying to import the stuff will just leave you running around in circles as they will take your order just to reply a week or so later with sorry it's out of stock, translated into South African terms: "We can't export that kind of materials as it's is deemed dangerous goods, sorry but get well soon anyhows"

Now I didn't give up and found a place in Pta that sells the materials for making the soft silicone moulds, the plastisol and the hardners etc, and got a couple of great lures outta the ammounts of materials I bought (not too expensive, but very time consuming), paints, vinyls, lacquers, etc, all seemed easier to get hold of but some had serious waterproof issues.

I even carved several Balsa wood lures complete with tensile steel inner frames and eyelids for line and hooks, covered them in various reflective and holographic types of materials, painted them weighed them, checked their buoyancy etc. but never ever had any luck with even one of them, so i removed all the hooks and filled them in a plastic bag and thats how they join me on each trip.

So, if you have any specific questions regarding these processes then shout and i'll give you my take on the question ito what worked and most importantly what didn't so you don't need to waste time and money on the failures.... as it can be extremely frustrating!

Good luck, or rather just go and buy the lures, you might not get that exact lure you want but it will be easier and probably a whole stack cheaper.

Will see if i can get you some pics of the lures i made.......

Hi LGF.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm still going to press on and see if I can get a few results. Perhaps you could pm me the  name of that company up in Pta. I'd also like to find a way to use the hundreds of old worms I have and melting and re-moulding them is hopefully one way.

I'm currently looking into the paints and coatings for the wooden lures so I'll let you know how I get along. Pics would be great if you can. I've got no intention of gaining anything financially out it but would love to catch a few Larry's on a couple of hand made lures.

K will try and get the name today and see about the pics later today.

Also did the melting up and re-pouring of lures but the glitter inside tended to behave a bit strange as it seemed to concentrate rather than to be spreaded like it was in the originals, perhaps i had too much heat, also certain lures seems to obtain a serious stickiness after it was melted down, poured and cooled.... just some things to watch out for.

Anyhows good luck and again ask if you wanna know something specific?

Hi LGF,

Thanks again, nothing specific as yet - still starting out and experimenting. I would imagine once I've trialed a few methods and had my first few flops I'll be giving you a shout!
