Tuna's casting report

after reading the topic about distance on Sealine i was wondering how far i cast with my slide gear

I know where a normal edible rod and light line gets me but i have never measured the heavier rods and lines-

I manage to hire a 100m tape measure in town and wih my personal assistants(Thea and the rottis) we went to Kleinkrantz beach

i measured the distances up to 150m on the beach and with that done i started casting-eish my arm were moeg near te end

i uses my Penatagon (hy's soos n besmstok) mostly and i made a few cast with my Gremlins shark extreme witch are a really short rod more suitable for rocky deepwater points

I made between 3-7 cast per different rod and reel to measure the best distance)

weatherwise it was overcast with a side on wind of about 10knoths

first the Penatgon with a trini50, loaded with .60 Kingfisher and a 1mm windon leader, 9oz weight with grapnel wire--BEST distance 115m

Penatgon met Toruim 30, .50 Diawa lyn, .65 leader( not a windon) and a 6oz cone sinker -best distance 138m

lastly my fav sliding optiion

Pentagon with Trini 30, .55 double x HA line, 1.6mm windon leader and 9oz weight--BEST distance 120m

all in all what i can say is with heavy gear you dont get tht far, with edible gear i can get it over 180m with the thicker lines and windon leader i could only manage 138m

and also that a cone sinker travel way better through mid air compared to a slide sinker

En i'm a skiny bugger so my arm's cant push as much power in it... Any way thanx vi di report .. jj, To your point about build, me and a friend went casting a few weeks back! he is big(6ft5) and me is 6ft. We used the same setup, elbe waverunner with heavy tip and 7oz sinker, I outcasted him by 30m on average. So what i am trying to say is, it all comes down to technique mostly body action!

Some nice action pics Tuna, you can see the rods loading up nicely and those distances are pretty good as well , throwing an 8 or 9 oz sinker for a couple of hours is heavy work on the body as well ...good report .

Glad to see the pro's can also get the odd overwind! I feel a bit better now :) I would have thought that slide sinkers are quite aerodynamic? Anyway, thanks for the nice report

Hiya Tuna,

My results are much the same on heavy tackle.

Torium 30, BM T53, .55 mono, 1.3mm wind-on, 8-9 oz slide sinker.

120 - 140 meters average.

Once again I must mention as I did in an earlier post that the thin atmosphere here in GP gives us about 15-20% added performance on the heavy tackle as there is simply less air resistance (just think what the weight of 140m of 0.55 + leader + weight [including wind resistance]is)

Tuna those are good distances for the class of tackle you are using and as I expected the distance on the Tn50 is a lot less because of the energy it needs to get it started.

I find I cast at least 30m shorter with my Torium 50 vs my Torium 30. Added to starting the spool up is the fact that I find it dam difficult to keep the spool locked with my Thumb as I can't get a good grip on the spool)

Great photo sequences.

Did you make any casts with the 0.45 and edible gear on this session?

I find the rods you use and the casting weights far to heavy for me.

3.5 mt Purglas /3 0.50- 0.55mm line 5 oz weight gets me roughly the same distance as you are getting no matter how I change the combination of tackle with that line weight.

i need an nice edible rod so if anyone doesnt use one and want to donate it to me i will gladly take it
i have a toruim 20 with .45 , whenever i get a proper rod that i can load with a 6oz weight i will try and aim for that magical 180m , would be nice 2 brake 200m but for that you will have to have ideal windless conditions and good gear

Will thinks about it. Maybe as a wedding present.

I might just take a SeaGrand HMG for myself from the warehouse and donate one of my edible rods.

Don't know what you're going to do with the rod for edibles though. Maybe use it to catch some fresh bait for your Nunus?

Thanx Tuna, nice photo's. Were you not tempted to make a cast to your right with a stukkie rooiaas? Sea looked good.

Were the distances a surprise or was it what you expected?

Tuna, do us a favour and next time you go cast put the Tn20 on the Pentagon (mismatch for fishing) but I think that reel with the 0.45mm and a decent leader is going to cast a 6 or 8oz a mile.

Did you try any casts with an 8oz?
