Tuna lures

I recently bought some lures and would like to get some comments and recommendations from the guys in the know how? In the pictures the lures on the left will be closest to the boat on the flat rods and the lures furthest to the right will be run on the uprights. I am planning on using these setups in Cape Town end of October. Will these setups work?

I use them all, they ALL work - the lures and colours that is.

The spreads - hmmmn a bit flat for me. I would have some variety.

I use the two setups as a staring guide.
My normal spread is as per the yellowfin but with another lure.

I tend to go for two birds one with the big white yamashita (ALWAYS) and unchanged.
Then the other bird either has a yamashita or a megabait.

I now run two big Havocs on the outside and two x-raps on the insides.
The havocs, as per your step 1 but the biggest you can get are awesome.

If I'm looking for longfin only I would run the yamashitas a lot closer and without birds.
Yellowfin I like to run one bird/ squid - bird / megabait very far back with a bird and the other almost on top of my deep divers.

My favorite behind the bird is my homemade daisy chain with 4 - 5 clear squids and a pearlescent white big yamashita. That thing goes off and it's either a very big longfin or a big yellow.

The bird squid combo produces so many of the bigger class yellowfin when it comes to trolling. The White squid behind the big pink and blue Boone bird has been a winner for me. Also the small lumo yellow and pink birds with big squids have been a good combo.

Not sure with birds if colour matters at all. In fact I do not think it does but I think the tone matters, light and dark. For me the lights have been more attractive to our yellows than the darks.

Thanks HT.

Have you tried this in the Natal region? I think it could work.

Shagnrelease? Bennie?

Reffering to other species as well.

Nope, Cuda Dusters and glow beads were pretty much all I owned when I fished Natal.
And then the big gun stuff for Up North, but never Birds etc.

Pitty I reckon up North it would have been a treat.

There seem to be a few havocs on the market well the name anyway.

The lures pictured above in the first post are from Nic Jones and to my knowledge he is the only one who sells them as he has the mould.

And oh yes....

The yellowfin have arrived with boats getting good numbers of some very big fish.
I'm out there tomorrow with Junior. Miles has kindly made space for us to come crew.
YeaHa!!!!!

Hi,
We do use birds here but only when trolling for Sails, Marlin, Wahoo and the obvious Dorado, normally a small to medium size. Like HT said, most of our fishing here is closer inshore and usually on the prowl for couta, rigging with dusters is the norm. Last year we did absolute 0 trolling and sight fished mostly for Dorado getting the very odd small tuna. But this was so we could experiment with circle hooks. As a rule, we never go anywhere without a spread but it will include at least 1 bird in there or even running a popper right at the back at about 60m even (similar effect) which has produced a saily and quite a few tuna in the past. This year we will be doing a lot more big game fishing and plans are already being made. Birds included.
Going to RB, you will find a lot more birds on board because that is primarily our bill fishing grounds.

Cheers
Bennie

What changes would you bring in with the lures I have? I am in the process of rigging 30 Yamashitas which also will be available. I will also use the birds as prescribed by the doctor with the squids. Will a bird in front of the Havocs also work? This was the spreads Nic proposed. This was just a starting point.

Oh yes we will! I am already eyeing my bank account to see if it will be able to take the hit...

We need to go fish RB as soon as the water warms, I am very keen to do some scouting around, even if we don't get much fish, for later this season.

HT, hope you having a good day on the water, and you've got to come fish with us here  sometime!

Hey nicos - bro I need to come up to KZN and fish my old stomping ground. I couldn't care what I fish for up there but a surf launch would be great and the warm water would be like a day at the spa for one of the fairer sex.

DieGeneraal...
Pretty much answered that, I run my spreads as per posts I made in this thread.
But I'll read through again and see what I missed.
