Tuna Gaff

You'd probably need more than one gaff so it makes sense to get a few different ones. I have on board an 8foot, 4foot and 1 foot (still to be made up). The long ones are all the heavy duty bamboo pole type (normal gaff), the 1footer will also have a lanyard on to double as a meat hook. For the larger fish you'll need at least 2 gaffs to secure the fish boatside while reaming and bleading. Anyway I'm just making conversation - the real answer will follow, I'm sure.

I prefer the thick handled gaffs. They can just take more abuse.
We have one 7ft and the rest are 4ft.

We only need one long one and the next gaff goes in boat side as the fish is pulled in.
We also only gaff on an inward swim, never an away swim so perhaps that's why we not so keen on the longer gaffs.

Normally on most fish we gaff once and go straight to the t-bar with hook ie meet hook.

Lanyards and gaffs, meet hooks are fine as long as you NEVER put your hand through it and use the rope as a handle. Locking that thing around your wrist is like playing Russian Roulette. The rope is nice as you can hold the hook on the rope and lean back without having the rigidity of a gaff.

Tried one of those fancy expensive aluminum jobbies. One trip and ended up in pieces as a big fish just bent it while pulling over the gunnel.

I buy everything from False Bay tackle.
I belong to the club so I try support Tony as much as possible. I only shop outside of there if he doesn't have what I am looking for.

He has Gaffs. If he didn't then my other shop of choice is Nic Jones in Tokai.

But most of the guys have them. Tony is the cheapest that I have seen.
