Im going down to tugela mouth in september for the first time and im hoping to catch a couple of good fish in the sea and river with dropshot and rock and surf. Has anyone got some advice for me in terms of traces and baits etc. Ive heard the fishing down there is awsome. Please, any help will be appreciated.

Howzit bud.Im not so much into drop shots, but in September you should target Garrick with them, small surface plugs like the GT Ice creams work well for them.As for the fish that you can target on R&S Tackle,do a search on the forum,i did reply to a few posts recently as to what fish can be targetted in September. If you don't come right, let me know.Id be glad to assist if i can boet.

Having some trouble finding info. Do you have any tips for me like what an all purpose trace is for most fish in the area and what tides are best to fish etc,

thanx

Howzit bud.Very few fish are feeding at Tugela, other then Salmon and Garrick.Ok lets say we targetting Garrick!Use a non return slide, with +-1meter of 0.80mm Fluoro Carbon and a 5/0 to 8/0 hook, depending on what size the Mullet is.Attach the hook on the head, just behind the eyes, not to deep thou. You might kill the Mullet. For Kob,use the same trace, but with two hooks, one on the head, and through the top lip of the mullet. However i find that a single 6/0 to 8/0 Circle Hook through the top lip of the Mullet works best.Remember for Kob,don't use Mullets bigger then your palm! Both fish feed best on the Incoming tide.If i get the Time ill post some pics of traces for you.

Thanx that will be great! Could you also maybe include a couple of traces for throw baits? Where will be the best place to fish off the beach?

We had a beach house in Tugela for a while, if you wanna catch zambezi or other big sharks (Raggie,Blackfin) use any live small shark you can get even sandies, rays and preferably kob/shad of any size .

Slide it with a non return, keep your rod in your hand! when it starts pulling down your rod, disengage clutch and let it free spool for as long as you can keep your nerves-"dan moet jy kap boeta." Important, not to soon.

When we were there last time there was sandbanks(with rocks i think)at  approximately 200m   and that is exactly where they will break your line off.

I once hooked something with a  reasonably small milky shark , on 0.55 line, it took my (only) 250+ meter line with a heavy drag and broke me off-empty reel...

Its best to speak to the locals when you are there and find the nice deep holes. Sidewash and seewead can often be a problem-take grapnel sinkers.

good luck

excellent advice Jakes!!

Many guys seem eager to fish Tugela, i think Nemesis, should offer his services at a small fee so that the guys will get the fish they are looking for!!!!

I say small fee cause i wont want someone to show me how to fish the area for nothing!!!!

Nemesis, on North bank we slided our live baits,  even sometimes oppsite car park and then going up north past last caravan park when you see a big deep whole/at places where you see the foam moving directly  into the see with a current. It never looks  the same, as you know, the big deep holes shifts constantly up to amatikulu. not sure if the road(bad) to nearby amatikulu mouth still exist.

If you can get a live big milky, other shark or big edible while you have side wash-  swim your bait -no sinker just leader trace hooks and live bait, just walk with it while covering a large stretch of water , my brother caught a monster after walking for more than 200m this method- (something to do while having that irritating sidewash)

Ok i understand what you saying, the bank formations always change and shift at tugela.Yep the road still open to Amatikulu.Cant wait to swim a kob once the sea settles!
