This weekend was very successful. Caught tons of carp, got some slightly bigger ones this time too. Morning was slow as it was alittle cool, but 9am the fish were hungry and strong and pulling like Buses.

Thanks for the reports, what fly tackle setup do you use for the carp?

Hi

The dam is very well kept with no reeds or such so you can go lighter on tackle than you would normally use for carp.
Depending on how i'm feeling I use either a 5wt or a 4wt rod, floating line, 3x leader, 4x tippet.
I use orange or yellow DDD's trimmed down to the size of a cat pellet treated with float-ant.
and bait the water with small amounts of Epol cat pellets. dont over bait the water as the fish then spread out too much. As the fish are feeding watch what direction they are moving to get the pellets and cast your fly in front of them.

Which fishing would you rather take the children and wife to, Brookwoodtrout or Trouthunters. It's a toss up between the two at the moment.

If the weather is good for trout your kids will pull in so many trout from the kids dam at brookwood you will be broke, cause you have to keep all the trout you land, no matter how small. Brookwood is also very very busy. so if you don't get there just after 6am you will struggle to find a nice spot to set the family up. and the Monkeys are becoming a problem, raiding peoples pick nick sites and pooing on peoples cars. Last 4 times Ive been my car has been a disgrace after-wards. They actually broke the wind screen wipers of my buddies car.

Trout hunters is not so busy, They have lots of braai's all over the place, Nice tree's for the family to sit under. and whats nice with kids is that there are stacks of carp to catch and you can return them to the water. The carp really start feeding when the water temperature is up. This time of the year in Gauteng you are more likely to catch carp. Trout are starting to get lazy past early morning. The down side of trout hunters is they are pretty close to a train track, so every hour or so, there is quite a noise from train speeding by.

at the link, there are a few pics of my buddies and myself with 1 or 2 of the carp we catch there. You can kinda see some of the scenery. Unfortunately none of them point to the nice spots.

Thanks for sharing, all the tips you posted on fishing the dam worked, surface fly fishing could have been better if the hectic wind gave us a chance, but a great fun day with the family non the less.

Its R50 per person for they day, C&R for Carp, Kurper and Bass. R70 per kilo for trout which they only stock in winter it seems.

was there This last weekend. The fish on average have put on a few KG's over winter. Caught my biggest one so far there at around 8kg's

Was there last week Thursday. They have done alot of upgrading around the place but the fishing is still good.
