Hi

I will be in the Drakensburg next week and want to do some trout fishing.

I normally fish on the surf, so this is new to me.

I have a dropshot rod and reel, hoping to use it.

Can anyone advise me on what tackle to use, with this kit.

I will appreciate any advice with which lures, flies, knots, etc to use.

Will be staying at Castle Burn, believe that there is a dam at the resort, any info on where to fish on this dam will help as well.

Cheers

Hi bud,
Ryan is spot on ! Pm leonard, he is at lake naverone, about 4 kms up the road from Castleburn. Not sure if u can fish for the day there ( at Naverone ?) Also Drakensburg gardens is up the road, literally ! There is also a lake there, I was there last year, it cost R65 a rod, and I got my 1st trout there. Also, there is a spot about an hour's walk from there, it is part of the river, where it sort of loops, bloody beautiful, one of the locals took me there, and I got my 1St "wild" trout there. Can't tell u exactly the directions, but I'm sure Leonard knows the place !!

My 2 bob.

Report on my 1st attempt at trout fishing:

Arrived at Castle Burn in the Burg on Monday the 7th of July.

Settled in the chalet, @ about 5PM, stepped out off the chalet and cast my first line, with a reddish fly and a small bass clipon sinker, using a dropshot rod with braid. Had a bite, lost the fish. Second cast and hooked a beautiful trout of approximately 20cm. Continued casting for another 15min and caught another trout, also similar size as the first one. Released both fish.  Stopped fishing as it got too dark.

Tuesday and Wednesday the wind was very strong. Fished in the evenings with various bright coloured flies, with no luck, changed to a pink worm, cut it in half and caught 3 trout also approximately 20cm long, released.

Thursday the wind had subsided and fished at the big lake, in the hope of catching the big one, did not get a single bite. Used a canoe and went around the lake no luck. Frustrated and went back to the dam outside our chalet and managed to catch three more trout, released two and braaied one.

Left on Friday. I think the name of the dam outside the chalet was Dabcheck. It was the most productive dam i think. It was a very good trip for me and hope to catch bigger ones next time.

Thanks once again for all the help and guidance guys.

Cheers
