hi there

i have been fishing crazy my whole life but have only recently had the opportunity to do offshore fishing so would greatly appretiate some advise..

we are sailing across the atlantic soon to brazil on a 44ft cat which should take bout a month as we are stopping over at st helena for a while..

i wana troll all the way there and do some runs at some fishing looking spots (like mount vema) Does anyone have any advise on how to troll.
how far behind the yacht to troll.. were to put a bird?? weather to troll deep diving rapalas or not? squids? bungies? and the use of dasy chains etc...

I know a few people that have done the trip and all have had the same result, Few fish. That said, they caught longfin up to about 2 days out of cape town and then nothing until they neared barasil. One friend lost a huge marlin that stipped the 80lb reel. For food fish the bungy cord is probably best with squid, feathers etc. rapala types would work but it all depends on the speed you are doing.
Remember, the open ocean is a bit of a "desert" you need to find the oasis to find fish, be it a rip line, flotsome, island etc.
the use of a bird will also be dependent on speed you are making. too slow and it wiond work.
tight lines though.

Don't rule out a speargun.

Assuming that the vessel has naked masts and the diver is properly tethered to the boat. (I have not done it but I am told that the drift comes quicker than you think. )

Speak to Louis at Rabitech about a rig where the spear is not thered to the gun but to the vessel.

At slower speeds and near floating structure you should pick up dorado

From what little experience ive had troll the lures out at diffence distances,start off with about 30m n go up to about 60m,it also depends what you will be trolling n at what speed..i know bigger kona's and big soft heads are more for faster trolling and rapala's,live bait and strip baits are for slower trolling.look for signs and for underwater structure,colour line,bait fish etc n look on your finder..its also good to troll you live and dead baits at different depths.
