Hi,

This is currently a MASSIVE issue in spain, and Ross Honey who organises both the World Carp Classic and the World Catfish Classic has now set up Friends Of The Ebro.

They dont only have people taking fish and killing them in big quantities but they are also facing a massive pollution problem at the same time. The problem is these people taking the fish are not anglers themselves but locals, so i think we can all relate to this issue.

I will see if i can get Ross to provide some more information, maybe SACS can help on an International level?

I hear you Renrew
I know it's not illegal to harvest carp, but not that size please. Also there is more than 1 carp they are taking, looks like maybe 3. 50kg's + for what. Not even Chuck Norris can eat that much :) Surely there is management on that water to oversee things.

I remember a friend of mine telling me he was fishing a dam here in KZN & saw an angler next to him catch and load in his boot a +-10kg carp. When my friend questioned this he was told they were going to eat it. Fair enough he thought, untill he saw another guy a while later drive in and exchange cash for the carp.

If one really wants to eat carp then thats fine by me. Just not the big ones & not for profit.

Just my opinion :)

Friends of the Ebro has now been launched right in the heart of where the campaign to clean up is most needed and the reason for its formation. There was good International support from anglers around Europe but many of the locals and public bodies that should have been there were conspicuous by there absence. The Mayor of Chiprana welcomed everybody and thanked them for supporting the campaign, then following the welcome Ross Honey Chairman of Angling Spirit was invited to introduce the project, its aims and goals. The presentation covered the background to the organisations he runs and the plans he has got for the friends of The Ebro and why it is so important that there needs to be action taken now before its too late. There was a very hard hitting factual video shown highlighting the problems which included mutilated fish and rubbish that had been filmed that morning. At the end of the presentation two young local girls dragged a sack of rubbish into the room and emptied it on the floor in front of the Mayor of Chiprana and Mr Honey to show examples of what was collected from the riverbank that morning.

The presentation generated lively debate from which some positive thoughts were exchanged. One consistent view was that the area under discussion should be changed into a day ticket area which would mean that everybody fishing that part of the Ebro would pay approx 5 Euros a day. The money generated from the sale of the daily fishing tickets would then be used to fund policing of the area and adherence to the rules along with rubbish removal from bins that would be provided. At the moment it is virtually a free for all which results in huge numbers of fish being caught and killed and tonnes of rubbish being left.

There were many positive things that came out of the meeting but what are the next steps?

It was agreed at the meeting that:

As many people as possible to register to help with the clean up project on the 26th 27th 28th and 29th May.

The international company Mappa would supply gloves to everybody assisting,

The Mayor of Chiprana and the local authorities would provide vehicles to transport the rubbish and dispose of it.

All helpers in the clear up operation would be provided with food and drink after assisting

Berkley and Angling Spirit would donate 50cents per bag of rubbish collected in angling equipment to a childrens angling foundation. The children are to be selected from both local and international locations.

Initial steps to change the area into a day ticket water to be progressed.

Research into the introduction of a not for profit volunteer organisation to be set up with legally recognised powers to assist in the friends of the Ebro project.

Lobbying of officials and regional authorities by Angling Spirit to continue.

Conclusion

There is a huge amount of work to do to ensure that the Friends of The Ebro campaign is successful. There is a lot of International support but local support needs to be increased.

A lot of mixed emotions here being a carp angler myself. On the one hand a great initiative getting things cleaned up. On the other hand local species of fish has been decimated by introduction of carp and barbell. The whole ecosystem is now ruined by this. Have you seen the interview with the auslander that introduced barbell to the Ebro he thinks he is a hero - total ignorance

Edge, carp have been in Spain for much longer. A very similar situation than what we in SA are in.... I also watched the story about the nut-case that introduced weilsh catfish into their system, and I dont agree with what he did.....   But I'm abit curious, are you saying, because carp and cats are not native to Spain, the killing of carp there should be condoned? lol....

I also beg to differ about carp decimating other species, as this happens in certain circumstances, not all the time. Its an argument thats been overused and overstated, many times unneccessarily.      Anyway, just my take...:fishn
