torium20 or saltist40

For a while now I've been thinking of getting a torium20, after having to modify my torium,30's drag and sort out a seized driveshaft I'm sorta drifting towards the saltist...do these reels have there problems as well or are they good to go out of the box? the one and only saltist I ever handled screamed like banshee when I casted with it, but I think that might have been due to k@k maintenance by the owner.. a lazy ass bud of mine!

Saltists... good to go out the box. I love mine. They aren't Trinidads or Saltiga's, but they are still fine reels... I've had my 50 for 4 years now and it still sings. Then there's the 30H - but you know what I think about that. I reckon they are good value.

Their standard drag washers are not Carbontex, but they're a heck of a lot better than the Dartanium junk that the Shimano's come standard with.

thanks Reefs! I know the problems the torium has, what I want to find out is has the saltist it's own set of problems? don't want to end up buying something thats gonna give me cr@p.best reel I ever bought was my penn 555gs,not one problem ever! unfortunatly does not cast that well.

Dont forget the old 15\30 add some braid to the back amd you will have the capacity and a reel that does not break .

Spares are easy available and cheap ,service you can do yourself and the frame can take alot off abuse .Ask old salt for that mod list for it .

I know it has no bling appeal but there is a reason they are compared to the toyota hilux .

I don't know of any "set of problems". I own several Saltists and have never had any issues whatsoever with them.

The worst fault I have found with the Saltist is when casting with braid... the braid tends to catch the crossbar of the reel and causes a type of "pitting" on the bar - little grooves where the braid has chipped the outer layer off. A quick sandpaper down to the metal and it's fine. But other than that... nuttin'!

Dave I have a fairly new torium 20 that you can throw. Mine was also submerged after fishing in the rain i was in a hurry to cast and the rod slipped out of my hands luckily i managed to grab the rod, used the reel the whole day after that rinsed it with fresh water and she is still going strong.
