Looking for smaller reel to maximize my casting distance for surf fishing.Has anyone owned or used Tor14 or G/W20 or sl20 reels?Heard good reports on all 3 and would like feedback or opinions,especially wrt casting.Still need to get prices as well.Thinking of setting it up with Elbe Waverunner 14' or Purglas 400/2 or similar.

I would think that a Torium 14 or a Sl20 would be a little small for a 400/2. I have a Trini 14 and it just handles my 400/1. Also use Sl30sh on 400/1 and it is great. Another reel to put into the mix, epsecially if  you intend fishing from rocks quite a bit is the Shimano 15/30. Minor modifications make this a great edible reel.

My advice would be a Trini 16 or 20, grandwave 40 for 400/2 

 For mostly beach fishing either Torium 14 or Sl30sh for 400/1. Both great casting reels. Boils down to personal choice. SL 30 has bit more line capacity.

400/1 can handle most edibles off the beach. This my favourite rod and it has landed any number of trophy fish. Use a Shimano 15/30 on mine in the bricks and either Trini 14 or Sl30sh on beach depending on wind and whether i will spin for cob. Use .37mm on trini and .43 on sl30sh to take little more abuse when spinning.

Hello Walt,

Your fishing requirements are very similar to mine, we both being of similar age, fishing style, outlook etc.

The best reel that you could go for would probably be a Saltist 30H. A very close 2nd would be the Torium 14. The Torium 14 is a lovely little reel with tremendous cranking power and drag for it's size. It is the same reel as the Trinidad 14, except that the side-plates are made from the normal Torium crappy materials and not the solid frame like the Trinidad has. All the working parts are further the same.

The advantage of the Saltist is more line capacity ~ basically the same as the SLX-30 that you now have. The Torium 14 would give you about 100mt less, but has a stronger drag. I have not upgraded the drag washers on my reels yet and they are still the originals. We tested the drag on both these reels with an electronic scale and the Torium has just over 3 pounds better drag (no matter what the Saltist manual says). Both reels have very similar torque (cranking power). The Torium irritates at first, because for some reason unknown to me, the handle is centred on the reel. All other reels that I own have the handles set off-centre. Centred means very small, tight turns of the handle when reeling in and this feels strange at first and is quite tiring until you have gotten used to it.

So as far as the reels go I would suggest the following:

For a 4mt or shorter rod = Torium 14

For a 4mt and longer rod = Saltist 30H

Do not get a 400/1 if you plan to use this rod and reel at Strandfontein/Macassar. Deon has a 400/1 and he only uses it where he can fish with a 3- and 4oz sinker and never against the wind. When you have to cast against the wind from those beaches, you will mostly have to use a 5oz grapnel to get distance and prevent overwinds. The 400/1 is not made to cast a 5oz sinker and is to 'slap' to get a reasonable distance with it against the wind. Get a stroke 2 right from the start and you will be able to cast between a 3- and 6oz depending on the circumstances, a 4 oz being the best for this rod (for me anyway, most other people I know only use 5oz on there 400/2).

Jy het vir my gepm vir pryse op Toriums hier in die kaap. Die beste prys hier is R1050, maar hulle het ongelukkig nou net stock van die 20. Ek dink in elk geval die 20 is n beter casting katrol en jy sal n groter verskeidenheid vis met hom kan vang. Soos ek gesê het ek het twee 30, n 20 en n 14, en ek gooi die vêrste met my 20.

 

Del my gerus as jy meer inligting oor die katrolle soek.

Hooked:- I agree with you full on - Abu are great.Had one some years ago- the 10000 model.Do the new Abu's still use the same concept of the extra gear which kicks in when a fish or heavy weight causes tension or load on the reel?Have you perhaps got any info with regard to pricings and models?Thanx and cheers!

If you mainly target smaller ed's like up to 6-7kg's, then go for one of the abu 6500's (CT-none level wind), no other reels can match them for distance. No reels even come close. For bigger fish then the 7000 upto 10000 series, check one of my posts about converting the bigger Abu's

Best bet is to buy a second hand one on ebay and ask if they will ship to SA, or there is also lot's of factory reconditioned one's, or of course a brand new one. The frame's also on the CT versions are also solid, try to get one of them, the CS models with the level wind effect your distance too much. Get some smooth drag washers for it, I know this is what the Aussie guys use.

 

The best thing also is with the magnets, you can really tune them up to suit you for distance, or like night fishing, wind etc.
