TLD 15 as 10kg trollign reel

I have been using a diawa sl50sh as my 10kg trolling reel. My existing sl50sh that I use as a surf reel is in need of retirement to spare reel so am thinking of downgrading my new sl50 to a surf reel. That leave me needing a 10kg trolling reel.

I have a few tld25's that I use for 15kg and am undecided on them,. One has given me endles kak, but have caught sails and many decent tunny on them so ja, they ok.

Can get a new TLD 15 for 899, maybe a bit less. What are your guys experience with them? No diawa shimano debate please. if I could afford a tiagra or penn international 12 or 16 i would go that route, but I like my nuts andf they would be removed slowly and painfully if i went that route. Lounge sutes etc seem to take priority.

Your comments and alternatives would be appreciated.

I KNOW THE FEELING, u need to learn to build up a secret stash of "emergency funds" for serious situations like these

Serious consideration should always be given to a 20/40

I know it's a star drag reel but it really is a very versatile reel, considering you are looking in the 10kg line range.

But then also, you talking about Sailies and Tunny, in which case you should stick to the lever drags ...

Ja, lever drag thwe way to go. Have used sl50 successfully for years, and if i stayed star drag, would stick to sl50's. havnt had a faliluere with them in 10 yrs use. as surf reels they very good as well and now days they seem to be cheaper and cheaper. I paid 899 for my sl50 10 years ago and can get them same price today. paid 1200 for tld 25 6 years ago and can get for 950-1000 today. seems crazy.
dont want to spend over 1k on a reel now as i said, lounge suites etc are WANTED

Hiya

I like my TLD25's for the simple reason, they're very versaile. I fish 30lb and 50lb on them. I know of a couple of league guys here who fish 20lb line on them too.

The TLD15 will work perfectly for you!! 400m or so of 10kg line, lever drag and a decent free-spool. I use to use my TLD15 as a spinning reel for albacore/longfin, with 30lb line. The only downside, it doesn't have harness lug's, but since you're used to you SL50SH, it should be no problem!! Servicing any of the TLD reels is RIDICULOUSLY easy!! Open one up and you'll be amazed at how simply it's built!!

For the money, the Shimano Tld 15 and 25, is possibly the BEST reel in its class!!

Another very good option is the Shimano TR2000LD. Its slightly smaller than the TLD15, but does offer a line guide/levelwind, a lever drag and about 300m of 10kg's. I own and fish 4 of them and can also VERY highly recommend them!! (Don't know the price though!!) Check: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewshimanocharterspecial.html

Thanks miles.
Ja the no harnes lugs a problem, but with the sl50 etc also have none. To date havnt used my harnes, but when i need it will curse if i dont have lugs.
I also thought about the tld20. takes a few hundred m more so could be worth it. will see what they cost. i do like using small reels though when catching dorado, bonnies etc, but must be able to handle sails and decent tunny when thety come alsong. A firnd caught the world 10kg record for thresher on one at my spot a few years back. 110odd kgs. line broke at 6.5 so reel must be able to take it. 3.5hrs.
Wills ee what prices i can get.
Thanks

Miles / hammertime

since you guys have forgotton about Deap Sea Fishing what I must hope to one day learn.

What's your comments on these reels ?

Make Mitchell - one is TI30-50 and the smaller with level wind is TI20-30GL

Hiya

Neilg, nice reels!!

I've never even heard of Mitchel Lever Drag reels!! Here, in SA, we don't get many different brands, so we're not exposed to different reels. Just look at the US shops and you'll see a HUGE variety of reels.

I do have and fish with Mitchell Fixed spool reels and they are pretty decent!! Great value for money!!

Just be carefull with that TLD50!! It doesn't like very high drag setting and i've seen quite a few whose reel seat broke off, due to excessive drag settings!! Other than that, its a AWESOME reel!!::S::S

I can't comment on the bigger Mitchells.
Have had a few smaller ones and to be honest they did their jobs just fine.

I can comment on the 50's and TLD25's breaking off at the real seat.
I actually posted about this ages ago.

I have done hours of research and have video evidence so to speak on this one.

Why do they break?
Plenty guys have a very bad habit of just winding on every pump. But they don't bother to check that line is being pulled off. So you create a "warp" in the reel at the base. Line pulling off under hectic pressure which is evenly dispersed to the base. Now throw into the mix the twist that comes from the wind in. Pressure going forward and an quick stop start inward burst of pressure.

This is what snaps bases, reel handles and drums.

TLD25's. My favorite reel on 10 kg line for Tuna.
WHY - uncomplicated and basic. Consistent speed and brilliant under low drag.
4kg drag for anywhere from 2-6hours - Perfect reel.

Thanks Miles and MC Hammer

TLD50 - NOTED
I'm not one of the lock (the drag) and load guys. It's loaded with 24kg IGFA, but will set drag at about 7kg. Maybe a little more.

I haven't really used the Mitchells, actually bought them at Commercial on a sale I think beginning last year. The small one will go on the kayak, when I actually put it to see.

I'm having so much fun with the Coffee Grinders that all my others reels are just staying in the crate ... they hardly ever see daylight lately.

tkei - go for the TLD 15, probably the best reel I have ever bought, as Miles said 'best reel in class' I have landed 2 sailies on mine as well as some big dollies, big couta and a highspeed 18kg wahoo with no problems at all - in my opinion the TLD 25 is too big for 20lb line whereas the TLD 15 is just right.

That depends on what you wanna fish for. The tld15 on 20lb just does not hold enough line for a tuna here in the cape.

The tld25 is a squeeze on the 10kg, which is why most provincial and serious league anglers opt for a Tiagra 30 Wides for their 10kg/20lb rigs.

Having 600 - 800m of line out on a league fish is the norm not the exception.

But I am talking about the cape and that's not the area in discussion.
Just a little side track on my part.

Guys thanks for the input.
I have a few tld 25's and use them more for 30lb line especially when we bottom fishing then they used as my trolling rigs on board as the penns int and tiagras get stuffed up by sinkers etc as no t-top yet. If i was fishing cape waters regularly, then i would use bigger reels for 10kg but our way usually used to target dorado and tunny to 25kgs. thats about the max size we see. I may see what the tld 20 goes for and if reasonable, may go that route.
