I was unaware that this species of fish was swimming in the breede river near Worcestor.

One of the Brit's might know that. It lokks like what I think they refer to as a "Tench".

I saw it written about years ago in one or another angling mag here in SA. It was imported and released without much success.

Local name is a tench. I ave caught a few close to swellendam at kambati. Apparently there’s allot in the breede river system. Also found juvenile fish in small pool after the big floods.

congrat to a nice catch

They are plentiful at a special place> www.breedeescape.co.za infront of campsite 1 is a massive hole where we fished. it took me a week to find out what fish this is.

They have been in there since the 50's and there are registered SA Freshwater angling records for them. (on this sit)

It is a Tench and the only 2 places it occurs is the Breede and Wemmerhoek resevoir.

That is a nice fish and in good condition and not to old a fish showing that they are still breeding in the river system, even amongst the masses of Bass (Large- & Smallmouth)

There are allegedly European Perch in the Wemmershoek resevoir and I have also caught them in Florida lake.

That'll mean the upper Breede system so they are probably also into big farm dams in the area as well.

Anyone heard of 4-5kg Tench caught or are they smaller like this one?

Not sure of a 4-5kg fish. The fish I caught were all about in the 2kg class and in bad shaped very thin and underfed. Nothing like those European specimens with that big bellies.

Good Morning

Do  you know the eating habits of this fish are (diet)

Are they the ones breaching the water or is that bass, i most of the time return the fish to water and did with this one but can you eat this fish or have you eaten one before?

Howdy, I don't know if you are familiar with those dams near Tygervalley at the place they call Majik Forest... As kids we used to catch a few tench (Tinca Tinca) there. They tasted better than carp as far as I can remember. My grandma used to make me and my cousin "kerrievis" out of anything and everything we brought home. She was an excellent cook!

So if you are looking for a place in CT; that's a start. The only houses there back then were the ones on the southern bank. The rest was forest. We used do camp there and fish thru the night. And get up to other trouble.

ps just reading in my book about tench:

"Prefers deep, vegetated water in vleis, swamps. Introduced. Breede river, isolated farm dams in SW, SE and E."
