Hi,

I wanted to try sardine there in December 2012, but could not get hold of any (shops were closed). I'm sure you'll have success with them. We use chicken hearts at the bridge and always pull a few small ones (+/- 15cm) out near the island. You can also catch at the pools below the bridge, but I'm weary of going down there. You can also give Craig a call and he can take you out on his boat up river. I haven't got his number with me now, but it is in one of the posts here and the local B&B's will have it as well.

Got it: 0791866423

Hey Sungro! Did you end up going? Any success? I was upriver a few weeks ago and fishedsome rapids and some deep water. Only caught two babies in the deep water but some of the other got knocked on 10cm bream and spoons.

I did manage 20 tigers (small 30cm) and lost 3 big ones just couldn't turn and keep them down. I also got a small barbel. But guys look at this beast a red brest kurper 3.8kg my friend caught it at the bridge.

Best Red Breasted Kurper I have seen.
Very well done.
How was it weighed - this is way beyond the current record for this species!

Well done again - it is a bus!!

That is the biggest redbreast I have ever seen...best way to describe it is HUGE! Congrats to the angler, sure it would be the new SA record. On what was it caught?

It was weighed on a elektronic scale. It was caught on green algey grass that grows in the komati. The bait was drifted without a sinker on a small hook don't know the size but it is smaller than a fingernail.

Sungro - very nice fish congrats to the fisherman.
Sorry without sound like the guy to downplay that beautiful fish but how accurate is your scale?
If the scale is correct the the fish beats the current SA record for Tilapia rendali by 2kgs which is makes that fish 100% larger than any other Redbreast ever caught in SA waters.
Without giving you a further beating the tiger looks well short of 4.43kgs - I spent more than a year in Barotseland and all the 10lb'ers I caught there looked a whole herd bigger even without the long arms as depicted above.

As I say I donot wish to attack you personally it is just an observation - I have a serious dislike for bulldusters so I sincerely hope that it is just a common error of the scale weighing the fish in lbs.

Here's 4 and 5kg tiger respectively

This is what a 4kg 3spot looks like - I'm talking about the fish here gents...

Hi the anglers name is Wernich Cato he lives in Komati. I don't take the comments personaly I don't like people that talk nonsense and being dishonest about their catches. As far as I know that kurper is the biggest ever caught in komati and every thing gest bigger in komtai:fbash

It is a small electronik scale baught at a local fishing shop so I don't know how accurate it is I will test it when I am fishing with him again.

Must agree with Ryan that the scale might have been set on lb instead of kg - I think this happens a lot.

Great catch anyway, because even at 3.8 pounds (1.36kg) the fish is only 20g short of SA light tackle record, and way heavier than any of the other records.

Still a nice fat fish!

Cheers

hi guys!

i live on farm that borders to about 10km of the komati river and

have recently started targeting tigers in the river!

let me tel you, there are some beasts in this river!!!! i saw one swimmig casually by me and i guess it to be around 7-8kgs!!:fbash i didnt have my rod with me!!! it was easily 90cm long and 20cm broad!

after numorous fish throwing my hooks or breaking my line, i have declared war and

armed myself with my shimano trevala jigging rod , penn sargus 6000 loaded with

 80lb braid!!!

since then I have had about 7 good strikes but only managed to hook onto 1 fish witch also threw the hook in a lekker windgat jump not 5meters infront of me after fighting the fish for atleast 70 meters.

i use live kurperkies,+- 7cm

is it wise to use large circle hooks? or are the normal 5/0 hooks the best?and where is the best place to hook the bait? lip, behind head, mid back or tail/

my cuzzin tunes I must kap hard and repeatedly, i understand the bony jaw and all but tell me what you guys think?

my livey hangs about 30cm under the float, is this fine or can i go deeper?

ive been going to "my spot" almost every day now and still havnt landed a single tiger! surprisingly I have had more bites in cooler cloudy weather than in the heat and full sun of komati, I guess they chill in the shade where my livey cant reach, while im out getting blisters!

as I said, I have declared war , and hopefully I will soon share my victory photos with you all!!!

stywe lyne!!!
