Thought i would make my first post here, showing people the size bass that grow here in KZN, this bass was found dead about 4 years ago, (i couldnt find the pics, but i eventually found them, you may or may not have seen these pics before, but worth looking) It choked on a kurper, the size of the dead bass weighed in at 7.3kg's, im not sure if bass have dead weight like humans, or if it probarly lost weight, from the stress it was under, but ya its one beeg size bass.

This same farm dam produced my personal best of 5.5kgs in 2007 and my mates of 4.5kg's the day before me, i wander how big those fish must be now, if the locals havent hooked and cooked.

Tyrone: Welcome to the site. I have not seen these pics before but have heard of similar fish floating around at Inanda.

More VC.

Skaapkop, Natal bass is huge. Most bass anglers don't know the farm dams or have access to these places. There are monsters lurking in some of these ponds.

Tyrone, welcome, nice pics. Pitty it wasn't your pb catch.

Thanks, Billaridoo and Johan for the welcoming, it is a pitty it wasnt my PB, but maybe one day soon. Who knows ?

Sorry Skaapkop, no photoshop bru, these are original.
There are truly monsters around here, its just a matter of time, that someone pulls out a 7 kilo bass here in KZN.

VEEERRRRYYY nice bass!

Would like to fish your dam..."skimp,skimp"...

The bass choked on a Bluegill sunfish it seems and not a Kurper though ( the pic with the Yogurt tub ).

Okay shot man, i was trying to work out if it was a kurper, or blue gill, i googled some images, but looks like i got the wrong one. Thanks, we often catch bluegill by accident when we throw horny toads, and it feels like a big one, till you realise its a small blue gill.

Thanks man!

Will pm you next year sometime...between April and Oct...that is when the BIGGER ones usually bite!

I love catching Bluegills, they put up a superb fight!...I caught one of 900 grammes on a ultralight setup in 1997 and that was one of my most memorable catches!

The fish kept me busy for at least 2 to 3 minutes and wrapped me up in lillies a few times. The fight was very fast and the line cut through the water like when fighting a sailie or yellowfin!

The area were I caught it was a small pool  about 5m x 8m linked to a big dam...the water was totally covered in duckweed and about 1 metre deep...to the left was bullrushes and the right lillies...
The technique was to use a size 12 - 14 hook with half a maggot sized piece of whitebread dough lowered slowly up and down through the duckweed layer of about 3mm thick!

We caught plenty like this ,but that one was the champ!

Look well after those Bluegills, they are worth there weight in gold!

Regards

Herman

caught some of these at one of your local dams (highflats) just before christmas...i noticed the dam is not producing as many 2 and 3 kg fish as in previous outings.

shannon said you had caught a 12 kg + bag there a month or so ago?

ya, the dam has gone a bit tough fishing of late, water colour doesnt help either, but also alot more pressure on the water than before, I got just under a 10 kilo bag there about a month ago, Craig got the 12 kilo bag, fishing has improved a little, but still tougher than normal, we are spoilt with the fish that come out of this dam.

i noticed on both visits to the dam last month...there were people taking fish out the dam...when i asked pam about it she said they are allowed to take small ones...i wonder how long the big fish will last?

i have found another dam which produces good quality fish in PMB but not as many...the best part is it is closed to the public...it is only open 1 day a year for the new hanover comp...last year there was a 5.2 kg caught during the comp.

ya, i spoke to Pam about that, cause i saw some fella's catching bass from the boardwalk, and throwing them back straight away onto the grass, without evening weighing or measuring, just ready to make one fish curry and all.

I walked up to them as the oke was throwing a 1kilo bass on the grass, and i flooked them i said this dam is strictly catch and release, and they must put the fish back, the guy was acting dumb, so i told him dont worry, i will do the honours, so i went picked the fish up and released it back into the dam, he wasnt too impressed, but i didnt care. Unfortunately there were two other bass dead already, also about a kilo or so.

I spoke to Pam afterwards and she reckons, that the guys can take out the small ones, as there are too many and its good for the dam, but i said to her that if those okes catch a big one, theres no ways they will release it, especially if they paid R35 to fish. So i will try convince her to stop them from taking out, and will speak to her to see if maybe Ken or some1 can guide her in managing the dam or relocating the small ones to another dam.

Good to hear you found another dam.....so when are we going? I think that 5.2kg was caught by my rugby mate, Andrew Lessing ? not sure if it was the same year.
