This truly is a labour of love. But unfortunately more labour than love!

Thursday after graft, Lucy (my avator) started bouncing around again and once everyone had buggered off, I grabbed a piece of aluminium and jumped onto the lathe. Machined a simple trolling head, then polished it on the deburing wheel and then on to the buffer. Came home and made a primitive mould from it. This morning I cast a head. No insert at this stage but it was just to see what it would come out like.

10 hours in the mould because I did a very mild resin/curox mix to reduce shrinkage.

What I discovered was that the polishing involved to get it half decent is hard work. 1 hour later and I recon I got another to go. Will try polish it at work rather on my HD machine.

As I sit here, I have a soft head in the mould. Hopefully that will come out perfecto!

On the lathe!

The resin head.
You will notice there is a hole through the centre. I made the mould so that there is a removable pin through the middle so that I can make soft heads. Normally with resin heads, The hole is drilled afterwards.

Next to a lighter to give you an idea of the size.
The billot head is 34mm diameter X 62mm (85mm overall).

Flip,
I was just going to make a mould to make lead inserts and cover them with some flash.

What is that. It looks like real fish heads?

Have you got a picture from the front? I recon you could get/print a picture, cut it out, stick eyes on it and that would be your insert. Alternatively carve one from bulsa and make a mould. Cast them in lead and paint them.

Share buddy.

this is pretty cool , regarding the polishing , maybe try a bit of brasso , maybe it just takes a lil less time than without brasso , just a thought !

Howzit Toe,
I am using Green and white soap. The industrial stuff. The posisher I have at hame is a little DIY thing but I have a machine at work that I use for Stainless steel. That will do the job for sure. Another thing is to polish slowly because it "burns" the resin if it get hot.

Tauruk, I would just like to know what it is.

Do you have a link to that forum thread for me?

I found those pics on Bloodydecks.

Not much other info but they look "Killer".

Bennie, get XL cream for polishing the resin.

Howzit Greg,
Polishing them is a kak job... Not for me! But I have made another one from ali. Going to make a few as and when the lathe is free and I have off cuts of aluminium.

Bennie, Is polishing the resin a kak job?.

You HAVE to love the material or else......

I know what you mean.

We should do something together on those clear ones with the realistic head in it.

I have no experience with trolling lures but the ones I posted MUST work.

Haha,
I made one! I used a real mozie head and it worked very well. Only thing was the head I used was too big so it touched the side of the mould. You see, generally I only keep bigger bait and if I want to make these, I really need a small bait.

Bennie, you are going to have to post a picture of that!

How about using sard heads? Nice and small with a nice long profile too. I'll happily donate some of my sardine run sards to the cause :)
