This one time off Fish Hoek rocks

My cousin Steve and I were hoping to pick up some Steenbras one fine holiday in Fish Hoek, Captown. We had white mussels on the line, and after a few insignificant nibbles, my rod bent and reel screamed. Obviously very taken aback on light tackle, I had visions of a stray Kob on the end...

It became apparent by the way this fish sluggishly fought that it was something else. After 10 minutes or so we finally got the fish onto the rocks - A nice sized juvenile Pygama Catshark of around 3 Kg's. Needless to say, I was more than surprised to pick up a nocturnal fish in bright dayligt.

Unfortunately the shark had taken the hook a little too deep to remove bare-handed (didn't have pliers), so I figured that it was better to give the guy a chance with a hook in it's mouth... So I cut the line as close to the hook as possible, and we released the fish.

After what must have been another quiet hour, another similar pull, and I even commented to Stevie that I reckoned it felt like another shark of about the same size. I could not believe my eyes as I landed the 2nd shark - There was my hook neatly in the top lip, right next to the one I had forsaken in the shark an hour before... The very same fish!!

Amazed and perplexed we re-released the fish - Happy, if nothing else that the bugger was obviously well enough to feed with a hook already in his mouth!

Over the years I have caught and seen caught a number of fish with large hooks in them. I think fish can be very robust....sometimes.

Thats one of the reasons why I don't use stainless hooks. Mild steel ones should after a relatively short time corrode away. Not sure how healthy the rust is for the fish but I am sure it is better than having a hook in your mouth for the rest of the fishes life.

Thats some interesting stuff there, and great report. For those of us (myself often) who have wondered how the fish fairs after being released with a hook, now we know. This may not be the norm, but it sure does give hope to all the ones we release in this way.

Great story guys....
I'll add mine...

Fishing on my God Parents sugarcane farm back home in KZN, for bass in their Dam...
I was fishing with my old man, and I was using Strike King floating Soft plastics, rigged weedless... using braid with a flouro leader....

Fishing the point of a little Island, I had a huge hit on top, and struck, WAAAAAy to hard, and popped the leader at the knot....

Rigged up again, same set up, about 10 casts later, about 3 metres from the original strike, BANG, another huge hit on top... and again, being a wally, I struck way to hard....and popped the leader again....

rerigged and carried on fishing....
My old man was fishing about 25 metres down the shoreline from me, using a carlina rigged soft plastic lizrd...10 minutes later I saw him strike and hes into a good size fish.... Stoked...
Anyway he has a good fight with this bass, and he lips it, and I see him lifting a fish around 1.5 to 1.8 kilos outta the water...
Then he says" Son, you not gonna believe this, come have a look here..."
So I amble over, and true as dammit, on either side of this fishes mouth, are my two previous soft plastics, still with both 50cm flouro leaders attached...... and then Dad's lizrd too, hooked almost in the stomach....

Couldn't believe it.... obviously a pretty hungry bass.... but then again, nobody said bass were intelligent fish!!!

HI NEPTUNE

FISHING ALBERT FALLS DAM I LANDED A BASS OF 2,6KG . REMOVED 5 OUT OF 6 HOOKS, 2 OF WHICH STILL HAD THE PLASTIC WORMS ATTACHED....LEFT THE ONE THAT WAS EMBEDDED IN THE THROAT AS I WOULD HAVE CAUSED COSIDERABLE DAMAGE TRYING TO REMOVE IT...HOPEFULY ITS STILL SWIMMING.

ONCE LANDED A SEA BARBLE WITH TWO OF US,MYSELF AND WELL KNOWN ANGLER NOEL SKINNER BOTH HOOKING THE SAME FISH AT HIBERDINE DURING MY DAYS OF COMPO ANGLING....FISH IS AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED IN THIS CASE...NEVER EVER 4GET THIS.

I landed a Leervis in the Port of Saldanha, the Dam, in 2000; I tagged and released it, and fork length was 64cm. I caught it again in, 424 days later, it crew 14cm. It was released again.

I am utterly amazed at all these stories - I wonder if more people tagged and released if these instances might be more frequent!

Perhaps there are less fish in the sea than previously thought?!

The tale of the vingerlappie.

One night at Struibaai back in 1990 on my old 6 man Ski Boat we were lucky to catch over a ton of Geelbek. During the fray of catching these beautiful fish I lost one of my vingerlappies overboard.
Needless to say when we were anchored inshore gutting the fish my lost vingerlappie reappeared as stomach contents in one of the cleaned fish.

Goes to show that shoaling Geelbek are not too fussy what they eat. Many moons ago I also caught several Geelbek in one shoal on a piece of dried-out chokka wing. A nice tough piece of bait and at the time worked well as all our other bait was exhausted. :)

Hi Nepptune,
You have just brought back memories for me. I have recently relocated to Cape Town & sadly , left the sugar cane fields , great fishing spots & great farmer mates, behind .
I lived in Zinkwazi , & didnt realise till back here that i had left a "Fishing Heaven" behind !!!!
Anyway , we will continue the pursuit of the fish in fishing ski's and off the beach & where-ever possible !!!
Tite Lines,
Les
