The first NORGALAS league of the season was held at Roodekopjes dam just north of Brits yesterday. The turnout was good and the dam also had quite a few bass and social anglers fishing.
Each productive bank was heavily fished throughout the course of the day, but the dam did produce enough fish for everybody to weigh something in.
Team Salmo-Goya (The owner and I) started our day looking for bass at a spot The Owner had scouted the previous week... first cast and VAS! The Owner landed his bass. Now it was my turn.. 'the bass wont be a problem today', I thought to myself...haha!
After a short while we found ourselves surrounded by carp, some spawning still and some feeding between them. I tried dipping and casting while The Owner was dipping for barbel. I got a bit of interest but the clear water in that area had them a bit spooky. One or two showed a bit of interest but I didnt hook up to any.
The Owner worked hard, dipping every barbel that he saw. The majority spooked but after a while he got his barbel, a 4kg specimen. We switched roles and I was lucky enough to get my barbel quite quickly, a lekker 8kg model
We then moved on to look for a bass for me... eveeeeeeentually we found an adult protecting a thousand-odd fry. He was a bit skittish and was not interested in anything I offered him. A bit further on we found a pair on a nest, getting ready to spawn. Using tactics recently learnt, I managed to anger one enough to get it to bite. We now had 2 species full. Time for Canaries.
Finding them wasnt difficult, they were holding shallow in tight schools.The Owner soon had his but I took a while to actually land one. My first bite came quickly but it just ate the tail off my curly tail. The second one jumped like a bass and spit the hook... a whiiiiile later, I finally landed one. And that was it for the day for us, 3 species full.
We did average, with most anglers filling up on the same. A few nice carp came out, but Lian took the cake with this awesome 8.2kg specimen, caught on bubbles
Anton Jansen got the biggest barbel of the day with this 11.4kg specimen
Gino Sada won the day with 5 species (the above + mosquitofish)

Shaun's 1.4kg bass was the biggest for the day, but there were rumours of a near 5kg monster caught there recently
The average bass was around 1kg
In terms of species diversity, Roodekopjes is very lacking and not really suited to traditional artlure angling. However, the ACC is bringing a whole new format into artlure, and I think Roodekopjes is going to shine as a top venue, since the ACC is all about BIG fish
