Jacques of Freedive International freediving with an Otter.
Must say I'm super jealous - very few people can say they had such an encounter.

His comments:

"Went out to test my new camera and housing (having never used it including the video function) and 45 seconds into the water I noticed an otter passing right below me (while trying to figure inspect the housing for leaks). Knowing how 'people shy' they are I gave up looking for it quite early and kept inspecting the new camera...when all of a sudden something was pressing on my shoulder, I looked to my left and there, right on my shoulder pushing down with two little hands was the otter, 'sitting' on my shoulder to try and get a peek of what I was up to! I was stunned!! I was hesitant to move but the otter pushed off and continued to play with my fins, new housing and even latched onto my arm a few times with its tiny hands every time I was paying too much attention to the camera! This is undoubtedly a VERY rare interaction and I'm very grateful for it:)

As mentioned I'm still completely unfamiliar with the video function so the video isn't pristine but its surely good enough:)

Lovely footage.

I also had the good fortune to see a raft of five otters, near Willows in PE.

Most people never even see an otter, let alone video it.

Great footage !

A mate and I were lucky enough to have a similar encounter a few years back diving for kreef off Koel Bay (Rondeklippe). The otter stayed with us for the whole dive and even followed us right back up onto the rocks when we got out. He was super friendly and tame, never seen one since.

Hey,

We often see them while fishing for Tail at the Kranz. I think that there is 4 or 5 of them living in amongst the ledges. It is one of those rare moments that cause most of us stop what we are doing and just watch... that and the occasional passing Whale.

Really cool moments.

Nice to capture them on video in their own environment...

Nice,
L

Yeah, I was lucky enough to have a curious one spend a few minutes investigating me in the kelp between Buffels and Rooikrans.  Spent several minutes around me, one of my very best moments in over 20 years of diving!

I too was lucky enuff to have an encounter with these playfull critters just a few months ago at Hangklip at our last interklub, what statled me was at first i did not even see it as i was wadind in between the klp to get to a rock in the middle of nowhere like i love doing to get great vantage point i see this bugger pop up right in front of me as to say hey mate ... what ya up to? how about you hand that sard over to me instead of those damn cow sharks!

Last year I was lucky to dive with some Dolphins at the same location too! Hangklip is truly a very diverse marine area!
