Personally, when fishing off a boat drifting over shallow reefs the 3 inch gulp swimming mullet always seems to get chowed a lot faster than anything else! Must be the wiggly tail. Otherwise 4inch gulp minnow in green/chartreuse -comes in red packet- and then a chartreuse pepper neon gulp squid. And i got a copper on a 7 inch nuclear chicken jerk shad the other day. So for bottom fish the flavour is important. But certain bottom species - more aggressive- will take a vertically jigged non-flavoured dropshot. I have caught scotsman, santer and white stumpnose on ratfink shads. But if targeting reef fish without some sort of flavour, your strike rate will dramatically decrease. Have also caught garrick on 3 inch gulp squid.
