Hi Guys
as you all know Enigma had this reel on his recent trip to the EC for a months of fishing. So i was eager to hear it peformed and lasted. I also had the opportunity to fish with it and cast it several times in a day...
Just note I am writing this to inform you guys on the reel, it is not a technical review merely from a usage perspective... and i also dont have ties to Sensation. just an honest report....
What i can report back is the following:
Casting- the reel had the casting collars in, both sets if i remember correctly. the reel comes standard with a bearing under the tention knob and two bearings on the shafts.
It was a real pleasure to cast, one could really let rip with it, with basically a free running spool. serviced it once on the trip, but casting stayed the same. castes further than most reels, except trophy"s favourite saltist! hehe. 9/10
Cranking power- i was very impressed with it and does stand its own with other name brands, reel stayed smooth under any drag setting, the handle is also well designed and fits nicely into ones palm. no blisters after a whole days of fishing and retreiving lines. 7/10
Dragstack- initially way over greased- which made the drag not all to strong, but a quick wipe down of all the extra grease it was much better. The overall drag pressure can be bettered to compete with the shimmies, but it is by no ways weak as Enigmas post will show. The main thing is that it stayed smooth under pressure and when fish took line close to shore it handled it well. 6/10
Parts- overall not bad, there is definatly some minor chages that can be made. some surface corrrosion here and there. I like the left side plate assembly, simple and strong. 7.5/10
Body of the reel- Probably the bes finish i have seen on a reel, this is coating wise, after suffering many abuses rain salt water and transport sessions is still looks like the first time i saw it. 9.5/10
Real seat-the biggest design flaw of the reel, it is almost square and although it fits into the winch it does not tighten down, and after one crank the whole reel comes loose..... luckily it came with a reel seat brace.... 0/10
Sealing of reel- after three weeks of living on the beach in the sand and water the reel had suprisingly little salt and build up in the reel. way less than the tor and saltist. This i feel is very important as we SA folk do get wet with out reels. 10/10
Servicing- I opened it with ease and with no guidlines or tutorials got everything back in place very easily. Also like the 5screw side plate assembly. makes for a secure reel. The pinion and main gear was also easy to remove and clean. 8/10
Overall impression- The reel to me is a serious contender in the market. I know the brand is relatively unknown, but it was honestly fun to use. If the right amendments is made before large scale release it will be a hit in the market. This is by no means a entry level reel. it will compete with any shimano torium and saltist.
Overall rating- 7.5/10
Lets hope the folks from Sensation hear what Enigma has to report and give us an reel that market ready that wont need upgrades. It certainly has the potential to it!!
