Great fish there Ponki - see you guys fished the Pinnacles... What was the sharks like there? What about cuda? They are very scarce here this year and I was wondering whether the you guys further north got any.

Hahah Yeldman u know your landmarks hey!!!

Alot of sharks hey lost R700 halcos there in one day.
The tuna would eat the halco and the shark would eat the tuna.
Thats when we decide to go with a spread of softies and thats how we got the marlin... that was caught of atlantis...
There were no couta around from the 1st dec til the 12th dec between all the boats and spearfisherman I saw one cuda of 12 kg.
But we did not get a chance to run further north because of the weather.....

Ponki, I am going down to Malongane in three weeks time. Where did you guys pick up the Hoo? Did you have any luck further north of Ponta Mamoli?

As I said previously  - it is better to avoid the Pinnacles from about 15-16 Desember as the sharks seem to have a annual get together there. How long they stay, I'm not sure but I was once told that they gather there to breed (especially the Hammerheads). Whether this is true I'm not sure but other times during the year there are much less sharks and they are hardly a nuisance.

Richard - I believe the guys got some decent dorado and kingies at Millibangalala, but cuda were very scarce up there as well

Ja I talked to guys that fished up at guinjata and they also got very little couta....We got the the one in front of malongane in 50m and the other infront of mamoli in 70m water... we did not run further north because of bad weather but would have loved to see how tecca banini was fishing....

The sharks are always there. Been going there for the last six years and every time they take their toll of tax. Pinnacles can be wild as you say. Two years ago in February, we hit one of those dead calm days where the water surface looks like ink. The water was so clear you could clearly see the reef below the boat on pinnacles. There were about 20 or 30 hammer heads circling around the pinnacle, but they were not taking the drift baits. It is normally the big grey sharks that give you a hard time there. There are some real monsters swimming around. They seem to really love jobfish and tuna.

Hi guys we fished Ponta in Decmeber my son caught his first Dorado and was quite excited. I caught 2 cuta all at Techa long way to go but avoided Pinnicles due to the advise on this forum about sharks. Local reefs yielded nothing. Most of the guys I spoke to who fished Pinnicles had problems with sharks. Hope to go back in March maybe it will be better then. Thanks for the info on sharks guys I managed to avoid lossing a lot of tackle.

We leave for malongane on the 31st of Jan, can't wait, just hope the weather plays the game. We normally get a fair amount of couta every year either off Malongane ledge (cloudbreak etc) or Ponta ledge (NNE of Atlantis). Drifting normally works the best, but the sards must be really fresh. The couta seem to be really fussy there. Also fish with short wire. Too much wire and no takes. Will post an update of the trip when I get back.

Hi Ponki, well done and congratz on the nice fish! I think the sharks at Ponta can open a tackle shops with all the lures that they have there! I hope the advice and waypoints helped!
