I make all my hook traces ±500 mm and my sinker traces ±200 mm, except for when I want to clip onto a grapnel, then my sinker trace would be ± 600mm.

For a trace upto a 2/0 hook I use .55 mm line, for 3/0 hook and up I use .80 mm line. Troos myself 'n groter vis sal nie so maklik my lyn afbyt nie.

Thanks for the advice on this rig. I have had many a frustrating day at BLAKES losing sinkers and rigs. I will be sure to try this next time.

Noweeds i cannot make ur clinic - though I would have definately joined. I have a small case of an engagement party (mine) that day.

I don't use a second swivel at the top. I simply slide a bead on the leader line first and then the sinker and tie the hook trase last. The bead wil stop the sinker at the mainline-lkeader knot. Giving the fish a 8meter free run before the sinker is lifted. Uselly this sets the hook for you.

I apologise for bringing out this old thread, but I cannot really say I'm sorry because the info provided is great and worth a look if you haven't seen it!  The concept of a limited sliding sinker is great and I will definitely be using it in future.

Usually, when fishing a sliding sinker over rough ground, the idea is to keep the sinker trace very short to lessen the chance of it getting stuck while fighting a fish.  There are various forms of rotten bottom rigs allowing the sinker to break off when stuck.  The simplest, as suggested, is to use a lighter breaking strain on the sinker trace to break if it gets stuck.  This is, however, extremely dangerous as the trace can damage and break during a cast.  My dad used to put a piece of nylon rope on his bottle sinkers to lesson damage of the sinker trace.

When powercasting the breaking strain between reel and lead needs to be at least 10lb per ounce casted.  This means you're faced with a bit of a dilemma if you want to lower the breaking strain on the sinker trace.  The Gemini breaker was developed to create a rottom bottom solution with the ability to powercast.  The attached image illustrates this part of the rig.  The breaker takes the stress in the cast and releases the sinker on impact with water to expose your "rotten" sinker trace.
