For combi-rigs you'll need a fairly stiff mono...unless you intentionally want the mono part to be soft and flexible.
Stiff material - look at 15-20lb flourocarbon, they are normally stiffish...
Soft, well, Berkley Big Game I'd suggest...also at least 15lb...

Another problem that i have with some shops in Gauteng is that you can buy something today and in 2 weeks time when you want to go and get some more because it works then you cannot find it again.

So ya finding a good shop stocking things regularly is like finding GOLD.

Just for info i heard it being said that MONO is not the right stuff for Stiff rigs.

What would your advise be here.

I've tried the stiffer materials but it keeps on getting a bow in it and the rig does not lay straight. I will try the BIG GAME and see what happens. Just been out of it so long!

Does anyone know anything about the dam in Leeukop...I live like less than a minute away and fished it about 9 years ago but never been back.

Is anyone interested in joing me for a session at Brookewood. Its a trout farm but has 2 dams that can be fishing other then fly. I've caught carp up to 6kg carp on fly but never tried specimen there yet. 2 big carp have come out there already the one was 17kg and the most recent was 15kg.

Gert, that is why I have been ordering from overseas for some time now. I'm tired of shops stocking something one week, and the next week its sold out...and then it takes 3 months for them to get stock again!

About the Mono... i dont fish it much, but it depends on what you want to do... you get a normal combi rig, and you get a "stiff boom" combi rig. I prefer the stiff-boom rig because it works so bloody well. For that I use Amnesia. But for a normal combi, any good strong mono will do. Or you can use hooklink braid with a stiff coating, and just strip the last 2-3cm of coating off to get a combi rig.

Lunker, dont worry if the combi-link does is not 100% straight. But if you want to you can put some tungsten putty, or a small splitshot in the middle of the combi, to keep it on the bottom. it wont straighten out the bow, but it will make the bow lie flat...

I have used Flocarb mono as the boom on my combi links and found after tying them, the old faithfull "Steam" method straightened them not too bad, (tension the hooklink and steam, then cool under tension) just remember to keep them straight in your rig wallet, or you gonna land up with the same problem again. but as MC stated, its not a train smash if they have a slight bow, the shot/putty should take care of weighting it down, the steam just helps!

With the hooklink materials available, you dont really need to make the combi-link using two diff materials, just strip the coating off for the supple end, nice part here, no extra knot! (and that knot can be a "Biatch" to tie some times)
Steaming the coated braids also works well.
