Tempo Angling

Hi There,

I have recently fishing competitively with the ProAm series and find it extremely difficult to keep my cool when the fish are biting every 5 - 25min. I'm fine with the 30+min intervals...., but I'm sure that I can catch more fish.

Can you guys perhaps give me pointers to make the most of my time?

Enigma once said at a sealine clinic in Apr 2010 that "tempo" angling is not always about the speed you get the fish, but rather the "rythm" you get your fish with. That makes sense if you think about it in cases where the fish bites on a regular basis.

An example he gave was with your first cast. If you get a bite on the rod before your second rod is in, it can sometimes be better to leave your first rod as is or strike and put the rod down, get you second one in, retrieve the first one. Then load your rod again with an already prepared trace and get it in as quickly as possible, if the fish are on the go, your second rod will by this time be on the fish.

Keep on working, and be over prepared on ready traces with a bol on, floatie on the hook etc. You cannot afford to have a rod to long out of the water for whatever reason.

And stay calm under pressure. Still important to get to your "kol", no use you rush and miss it completely. Keep the rythm going.

My thoughts.

Daai woorde van Enigma sal altyd in my kop vassteek. Hoe net kop. Maak altyd so 2-4 stroppe gereed.

Bv,probeer jou beweging beperk. As jy 40 bolle gaan druk in 'n dag maak dit sin.

My 2c...

Thanx guys,I appreciate your feedback.
I already have the keepnet with the fittings to hold your rod and net, and I must say it does save time.
How many prepared traces would you say is sufficient? 6maybe
Im planning to use another bucket to put the ready made traces in, should I only put the floatie on? I suppose the swd will go off if you leave it to long..

Im the laziest SOB in the world when it comes to traces, but I try to have 20 Sliding Rietvlei's,20 Fixed Rietvlei's and 20 Vaaldam's in the box.You never know what your spots going to be like,so I try to be prepared for snags.

I never bait up beforehand.1st figure out what the fish are taking.Sometimes they prefer floaties, but sometime bait that lies on the bottom.

Carp1, you will see some days you have to bait up before the fish bite. If you fall behind the tempo just a little bit you will loose by as much as 10 fish at the end of the day. This past clubcomp I only realised an hour into the comp where the fish were and I was 8 fish behind the leader at the end of the day. I normally have at least 2 ready loaded traces(one for each rod)> Get yourself the ready made semolina doug from Carp World or MG Baits(if I am not mistaken). These last a long time and don't go off.

Let me clarify.....I will load 4 traces before the hooter goes.2 goes into the water, and the next 2 is ready to go as well.

I have never loaded any bait at home the previous evening, although I have heard that it does happen at Bloemhof with the top guys fishing Nationals.

Any case,if the tempo starts increasing I will load an additional 2 traces,ie 2 in the water and 4 ready to go.

Ah! I see... I also don't think that loading traces at n
night before a comp can make difference unless for boilies/carp comps. Or maybe rigging baits for barbel and freezing it.
