Targeting Garrick

interesting.....

The story of garrick scaling the fish. is there broad consensus in this view.

i thought the garrick would take the bait swim away quickly stop and then bite the bait, after a second or two you should try and set the hook. not to early as a live bait is harder to swallow that cut bait.and you would miss the garrick

Im not too sure though. its what i do

Garrick don't really scale the bait....whats happening is they are turning it around in their mouth so that it can be swallowed head first.......
There is no "set time" you should wait. You will feel the pickup and give freespool. The fish will stop and start a few times while turning the bait...keep giving freespool till you feel it speed up and start heading away strongly. Then click over and set the hooks...

I'm not sure what Weeds uses, but there is a trace that Nigel Heath developed... it's in the FAQ Trace section - the adjustable Live bait trace for Garrick...

I recently did a seminar with Charles Stewart who is a master at garrick on live bait..........this is more or less his trace..............

You can substitute the swivel for a cuda clip if you want to swin the shad out................not a non-return, a CUDA CLIP!!

do you guys get alot of leeries down on your side,and how does your methods of capturing them differ from ours??

We don't get loads....in the strand where i live we get a good number in summer but all on spoon or plugs....also they are small....around 4-6 kilos!!

well i personally havnt caught one yet,but the leerie is next on my specie list and would like as much info and tips to just feel the thrill of landing one myself.

seen a good speciman at the tugela mouth bday bash by an unknown angler.man what a size

hi ronnie thanks for the excellent article on bronze bream and the garrick.i agree with you because if you examine the mullet  on a failed pickup one will notice that the garrick has been scaled.Hooking garricks on plugs and spoon is completely different to live baits AS THE THE HOOKSET IS MUCH QUICKER.       KILLY
